MOUNTAINEERING.
To the Editor. Sir, —It lias been pointed out to me tliat my letter (written in haste) on the subject of liiv recent experience on Mt. Egmoiit hush slopes, published in your issue recently, is open to misconception in the direction of ingratitude to those gentlemen who so kindly constituted the search party, headed and organised by Mr. ilurp'hy, the guide. I have already expressed my thankfulness to those I bad the pleasure of meeting on that occasion, but by this means I wish to extend my thanks to those I did not meet. I had every confidence i)i my own ability to return to the Mountain House, but 1 could not expect the search party to know wliether I had met with an accident or not. in which case without their help it would probably 'have been very serious. I donated £5 iis to the Mountain Club and paid .€"> for the ear, but although I gave Mr. Murphy a free hand to pay every possible expense, the party, including tiiie doctor, all proved themselves true sports, because they would not allow me to pay for anything. Mr. Murphy found my steps the night before and knew I would be all right in.the bush. This saved the party searching all night, although they were quite willing to do so. All those who go to climb •the mountain puscbt to be grateful to the
committee for engaging one of the best mountaineers in New Zealind (Mi. Murphy) to look after the Dawson's Falls house.—l am, etc., S. TURNER.
