NEWSPAPER SUED FOR LIBEL.

Creymouth, Sept. IS. Tn the Supremo Court a claim for £IOOO for alleged libel in the case Noel I'uat v. the fireymouth Evening Star lias commenced before -Mr. Justice Sim and a common jury. The subject of the claim is a paragraph that appeared in the local columns of the paper stating tlmt "a country shopman with pro-German, or at least down-hearted British, tendencies lias been engaged for some time in exploiting the residents in !his district." The paragraph also states that ladies waited on ihe shopman for patriotic purposes, and not only were refused assistance, but were subjected to a tirade of abuse sucli as could only emanate from a creature of Hurmish proclivities. PROTECTING THE CREDULOUS, Dunedin, Sept. IS. George Imorv was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in the Police Court, for falsely representing himself as a Syrian doctor, who could Mire rheumatism. Accused o'btained five guineas from a wjunan whose legs he scarred with burning wood, and put a pellet of beeswax in, covering up the wound with leaves.
