THE CENSUS.

TO BE TAKEN XEXT MONTH. The census of the papulation of Xew Zealand will be taken for the -night of Suiulav. October 15,-mid this year the work is being supervised by officers of the Postal Department. The collection is being made in the towns as far as possible hv postal officials, but in the country districts is being performed by men of good local knowledge, liv. C. H. Burton, Miicf .Postmaster at -New Plymouth, has been appointed enumerator for tlie Taranaki and Clifton counties, which have been divided into IT districts, aivl the appointment of sub-enumerators for these is now almost complete. .In addition to the population census there will also be taken a census of the public '..oraries. and the meeting places and attendance o'' religious denomination*. Particulars of all live stock in the boroughs, such as horses, cattle, sheep and pigs, and particulars of cultivation of ene.h holding of one acre or over will also be collected. These three returns arc being dealt with before tlie census proper, and, schedules are now being distributed, and will be collected per medium of the Post Office. The agricultural and pastoral schedules for districts outside of boroughs Ic.ive already been collected -ljy the police.
