HAWERA HALF-HOLIDAY.
To the Editor
Sir, —I noticed a report m to-day's News that the fact "that New Plymouth and Wanganui close on the weekly halfholiday at 12 noon instead of 1 o'clock carried the day" at the recent meeting of the Hawera Tradesmen's Association. This is hardly the case, the facts being that a petition against 12 o'clock closing was signed by BO far and 5 against the reform. This was further dealt with by a meeting of the executive ot the Association last Wednesday week, but the question was raised as to whether the executive could bind the Association on such a "radical" change, and, to save any quibbling, the matter was adjourned to a, general meeting, which was held last Tuesday, when the reform was adopted. Between the meetings one of the members obtained the opinion, of various New Plymouth drapers and outfitters and also of the secretary of the Wanganui Employers' Association, who all upheld the change as not being detrimental to business. —I am, etc., TRADESMAN.
