I Palmerston N., Sept. 15. John Max, a senior cadet, whose hsighf is sft. 10in., wasfoefore the Magistrate, Mr. Poynton, charged with being absent from parades. The excuse given wu that he objected to wearing "abort*.* The Magistrate remarked that cases had been before him where Oft. youths had to drill in shorts. He thought there should be some elasticity, so that boya above the average height should be permitted to wear civilian clothes. It was pointed out that defendant had not at. tended parades for six months, and aj fine of £1 and costs ivas imposed. Defendant said he would not pay, and lid will be kept in custody for fourte'en days."Can a member of the territorials whai is unfit for active or home service baj compelled to attend territorial drills was a question which arose in court today when P. Hadden was charged with! failure to attend drill. Defendant stated tlhat all his brothers had enlisted) and he had been "rejected. The Magistrate inquired of the officers if it waa not absurd that a man who is unfit for nomc service should attend drill; they; might as well compel a cripple. In reply it was stated that defendant had passed the medical test for the territorial forces, and the fact that 'he waa turned down for active. service did not affect his territoria' obligation. Accused; was convicted and discharged.
