THE TOLL-GATE QUESTION.
CONFERENCE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF LOCAL BODIES.
A conference of delegates from county councils interested in the toll gate question was held in the Eltham County {Council chambers on Wednesday. There were present; Messrs. A. C. Pease, C. J. Belcher, A. Tart and 0. B. MeOuinness (Eltham County Council); Brown and Binnic (Taranaki County Council); Hathaway and Christoffel (Stratford County Council); Murdoch (Hawera County Council!. Mr. Pease presided.
The discussion was taken in committee, and the following resolutions were handed to the press: That a representative of each county council concerned be appointed a committee to oppose, any Bill for abolition of toll gates which may be brought hefore Parliament, and to claim a continuance of councils' existing statutory rights-, also that a copy of the foregoing resolution be sent to all members of Parliament for the Dominion.
The matter of appointment of delegates was left to each council. Re schedule of tolls: JSesolved, after considering explanations from delegates present, that scale for motor-car charges be left for each individual council to fix, with a recommendation to keep same as low as conditions ! will allow.—Star.
