Shstrpe sends the Wanganui Herald ihe following:—"Among the many anecdotes relating to the career of the old Stormbird, I have seen no reference to her being cast ashore on the Hokitika beach in the year 1865. If I remembei rightly, the Hokitika bat had been unsafe to enter for several days, and, in consequence, a small fleet of carge and passenger sailers and steamers, bringing cargo and diggers to the new rush, were in the offing awaiting the signal of 'Bar Safe.' The day we arrived from Nelson in the old Elenor the course was clear, when a rush was made for the river. Among the many craft (if I remember rightly) which attempted to enter was the Stormbird. which grounded and went ashore. Some six weeks later, when we left the rush disappointed and liard-up. we walked revnd the boat, which was embedded up to the bulwarks in drift and gravel. A sto-ui swept her clear and into the Hokitika river a few day after we left, and how the old boat has weathered the winds and storms of the succeeding fifty-one years is known to many who traveled by her. one of the best known of her skippers being the jovial Captain Doyje " NOTES.

The price at which the Petone changed hands, £21,000, is endorsed in the latest issue to hand of Fairplay, the well-known English shipping journal. It is no* so very long ago that the Petone was sold for £OOOO. "It's an ill wind, etc." may aptly apply to the war so far as many shipowners are concerned
