AN AWAKENING.

MR. NEWTON KING IN THE INGLEWOOD DISTRICT. (By TalnTlereni). Since the beginning of April, when Mr. Newton King acquired. the business and premises of the late firm of Messrs Matthews, Gamlin and Co., and opened the Inglewood branch of hi? business, the controlling power of a master hand in commerce has been distinctly noticeable and new life has been infused into the veins of trade in the district. That Mr. King is satisfied with the prospects of this branch may be inferred from consideration of the substantial improvements that he is having made to the premises. The first of these to be effected was the erection of a comrnojdiotis shelter at the Dudley road jfock saleyards, wherein the sales can now oe conducted in comfort alike to the 'auctioneer, his staff and the vendors, purchasers and onlooking public. This building has easy access from every pen in the yards, and is, so far, the only noticeable improvement at the yards, though it is intended, when the drier season comes, to permanently improve the yards throughout and make everything as convenient as possible for persons either selling or buying there. ■Ait the mart, the headquarters of the .braii'dh, in Inglewood, Mr. King is having complete alterations effected, and now ais those changes are nearing fulfilment it is possible to realise how totally different from the old premises the ■whole scheme .of the building will he. Not only will it be nearly double the size of the former auction mart, but the whole internal arrangement will be altogether changed and made more convenient for the quick and efficient transaction of business. The whole front, with the exception of a roomy doorway, will bo of plate glass, and will contain the showroom where the wares wherein the firm will deal will be exhibited for inspection by prospective buyers. The front windows, as well as a large plateglass opening in the north wall, will ensure ample light for this part of the building. The public will have access to the auction mart proper through this showroom, having on the right the offices of the stall', which will comprise separate rooms for the manager and accountant, and public office, as well as a lavatory and strong room. These offices will be glazed all along the partition walls -so that all the rest of the building will be in ken from within. The mart, with a floor space of 20ft. by 27ft. Gin., will be immediately at the back of the showroom,'and should iprove a convenient and 'well lighted place of business. Next behind the saleroom will 'be the bulk store, 61ft by 44ft Oin, wdiose floor some feet higher than that of the front part of the building will be connected with the letter by a sloping platform. The added height is to give facility for loading and unloading heavy goods, doors for which, purpose are to be provided at the back, or west end, and the north side. A further extension westward, 25ft by 21ft, is for the housing ot implements as they come from their plsce of manufacture, and provides a place where they can bo put together without messing up other parts of the premise?. A verandah along the front will put a tasteful, and, to the people of the district, a very acceptable finish to the building, which without doubt will be a busy centre of ■trade in the -borough for years to come.
