. MONTHLY -MEETING. Tin; monilily meeting of Hip A'cw Plymonth Borough Council was held at tiio Chambers, Liardet Street, on Munday uvciiing. Present: His W'nr.-.liii. the Mayor (Mr. (.'. A. H. Johnstone. The Borough Engineer said that he had gone into the question of ronils, streets that have been laid down with tarred surfaces, and submitted information to the effect that 13.5,181 square yards had been completed. The quantity of soltar required to give the tarred streets a complete top-dressing would be 33,8(10 gallons, at a cost of .£2212 10s. Preparation of the surface, etc would be £IOSO I.ls 3d, or a total cost of £3502 5s 3d. The cost of soltar to be placed upon the tram route, and the cost between the tram rails plus a width of ISin on outer side of each of the rails was: For the whole area soltarred, 118,021 square yards, the cost would be—2!),!!.").") gallons soltar, .CISS3 Ss 9(1; preparing "street, heating tar, etc., £1482 15s 3d. Total. £3330 4s. The area of the linos along the route would be 20,147 square yards, counting in loops, sidings, and an'iß-in! margin on either side was 28,147 square yards. The total cost for the tram line? would be £SI9 15s fid. The engineer also reported at length upon the necessity for expenditure "on repairs in Wallace Place, Standish Street, Tukapa Road, Outfield Road, and footpath in Devon Street. Standish Street required attention and metalling should be done before the summer is over. Re-metalling from Bulteel Street to Wallace Road would post £llOO. Wallace Place to Tukapa ' d junction requires metalling, cost £l4O. From Tukapa Road to Belt Road forming and metalling would cost £l5O. Tukapa Road, from Wallace Place to County boundary is fn a very worn out stat"", being full of hollow? and ruts. It was 111 chains in length, and the approximate cost would be £Bl4. The portion of Outfield Road in the district (from Tukapa to beyond Gladstone Roatl) is quite in its natural state, and urgently needs forming and metalling. Estimated cost £3OO Tukapa Roaci footpath is kerbed and formed from Cutfield Road to David Street for 42 chains. It was originally gravelled, but now needs re-surfacing, as in wet weather it is colored by sheets of water. Estimate of cost, £SO. The footpath in David Street, from Tukapa Road to Old People's Home, would cost aliout £.B to gravel.
Under section 117 of 'The Public Works Act, KKIS," Mr. A. 11. Johnstone applied, on behalf of R. W. J. "Dimes, of Westown, for £lf> compensation for part of section 2(i Fitzroy district, containing ll.fi perches, for the purpose of widening; Tukapa Road.—Received. Cr. Smith reported that he had interviewed the representative of Messrs. Duncan and Davics with regard to the fence between Jfr. Thos. Knowles' property and the Council's property on the Old Hospital Road. He recommended that Messrs. Duncan and Davies be authorised to erect a boundary fence, and that Mr. Knowles be allowed to ■ plant a barberry fence, and also shelter trees, upon Mr. Knowles agreeing to pay cost of planting and labor, and trim back the hedge if necessary. The work, which might cost £lO, would greatly improve the Council's property. Cr. Medley asked if it were possible to get the cost of the tramway extension from Morley Street to Wallace Place, and if lighter raiU could be obtained He moved that the Electrical Tramway Engineer be asked to furnish an estimate of such extension, Seconded by Cr. Watkins. Cr. Smith considered the time was not opportune for the matter to be discussed. The motion was carried. E. L. Parkin wrote confirming a Verbal agreement to,supply 50 cubic yards of metal on Normanby Street, Fitzroy, in compensation for his drays carting over the road. He asked permission ' to supply same at bis own convenience. The Borough Engineer reported that the approximate cost of and tar-sealing Dawson Street, between Vivian Street and Bulteel Street was £353, It was resolved tha!t the question of the deviation of Heiulrie Street be referred to the Works Committee for a report. On the motion of Crs. Montealih and Mannix, the question of cropping or leasing the Waterworks Eeserve (old Hospital Road) was referred to the engineer and Cr. Smith for a report. The Council then went in!to Committee, and on resumption it was stated that the Works Committee report had been adopted. It was resolved that the report of Cr. Smith on the boundary fence between Mr. J. -Knowles' I property and the Council's property on the Old Hospital Road be given effect to. ■ < ■ I'lie Council adjourned at 10 p.m.
