ROMANCE OF THE FIJI ISLES.
LECTURE BY THE REJV. R. B. GOSXELL. A good audience greeted the Rev. R, B. fiosnell last night in the Good Templar Hall, where, by special arrangement with the Good Templars, his lecture on Fiji was given in conjunction with ttoeir opening meeting. The Rev. A. B. Oha.pi pell opened the proceedings and introi dnced the lecturer. ' Taking his hearers on an imaginary voyage to Fiji, Mr. iiosnell gave a most interesting (Inscription of Fijian life and customs, with the help of some very fine lantern slides. The habits of the ■oldtime cannibal days an<i the regenerating influence of missionary effort wero vividly portrayed. In easy and entertaining fashion the lecturer presented the history of Christian enterprise in the islands, and gave convincing details of missionary successes. In striking contrast were presented the cannibal excesses of a. couple 01* generations ago, and the enthusiasm for church life since exhibited by the natives. A telling appeal was made for support of the work of the church there. , On the suggestion of the chairman a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Gosnoll, Mrs. Gosnell (who shared a Fijian duet with her husband), Mr. N. T. Maunder (who. had operated his lantern for the lecture), Miss M. Cannell (Circuit Mission Secretary), and the Good Templars (who had shared the evening's arrangements). Mr. Gosnell lectures to-night at the St. Aubyn Methodist Church, and to-morrow, all Fitzroy.
