Word has been received from England of the promotion of Captain Weston to the position of Major. Mr. W. Ci. Eeid who has 'been secretary to the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company, for some years has been appointed manager for the company. A London cablegram reports that Edward Dwyei, the youngest V.C., who was known also as the "Little Corporal," while gallantly leading a charge was killed in action. A nephew ot Mr. Hills, M.P., has also been killed. Rev. A. C. Sievewright, late of Peterhead, Scotland, arrived in Auckland on Sunday by the Kimutaka. He will come to New Plymouth to take up work in connection with the Baptist Church. A Christdmrcb telegram reports that Canon Kuowles, well-known in connection with the Anglican Church through the history of Canterbury died yesterday, aged 80. He came to Canterbury with the first settlers and was the. first sub-editor of the Lyttelton Times before entering the church. Ho was for many years diocesan-registrar, and only retired recently from his various positions.

A pleasant little gathering took place in the Foresters' Hall on Saturday night, when the members of the Druid's Lodge met to say good-bye to two of their number, Bro. «J. McLean (who yes terday left for Samoa), and Bro. J. Turiock (who is home from camp on final leave). He was re-eleoted only recently.
