TE NGUTU-O-TE-MANU.
COMMEMORATION SERVICE, Thursday last, September 7, wa# tM 4Sth anniversary of the historic a* To Ngutu-o-tc-Manu, in which the gallant von Tcmpsky fell, and the New Zealand branch of "the New Zealand Veterans' Association decided at its last meeting to hold, as usual, a churcH parade on the nearest adjacent Sunday to the date. Accordingly, ye&terday morning the customary service was hdd in St. Mary's Church, in which and around wliicii arc centred so many memories of the early days of the TaiAnaM settlers and of the Maori war. Nearly, thirty veterans paraded, and, in addition, about seventy boy scouts and cadeta, under Major F. W. Sandford,' were i in attendance near the old Drill Hall. Headed by the Citizens' Band, under tiha oonductorship of Bandmaster F. W. fi> McLeod, they marched to the churcH, which was well filled, although the weather was the reverse of favorable. A special psalm (xlvi) and special hymna (1(15, 540, 221, and 391) were sung* and the Rev. A. H. Colvile preached an eloquent and impressive .sermon from tha text, "I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over,thither" (part verse 34, Deuteronomy W)h The preacher dealt strikingly onthe "utti fulfilment" of men'.* lives and ambitions,' but God, h,j said, had provided for this, and on th>» scroll of each life he had inscribed the magic words, "To bo continued." In those were our comfort and) our hope. . After the final hymn ("Onward, Christian Soldiers") and the benediction, the. Hand plaved the National Antficm, a.nd Bugler J." W. Walker, the only veteran present yesterdav who actually participated in the fight at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu, sounded the Last Post. The band then played tlw "Dead March in Saul," and with the sad but triumphant str&ine oi Handel's immortal work a memorable, service fittingly concluded.
