1 CAMPAIGN CLOSING ENEMY IN A CORNEf deceived. Sept. 10, 5.5 p.m. Johannesburg, Sept. 9. Th« East African campaign is likely to close within two months. General Smuts lias driven the enemy into the southeastern corner, consisting of unexplored, fever-stricken country, where further retreat will be disastrous. GENERAL BOTHA'S REPORT. STROXG VIEWS EXPRESSED, Received Sept, 10, 5.5 , p.m. London, Sept. 9. General Botha, speaking at Klerksdorp, said that three-fourths of German East Africa was now in British possession, including the whole of t'he railways. Although the end of the war is visible, it would 'he necessary to send reinforcements. He insisted that the South African contingents in France must be fully maintained till the war was property finished'. He was a man of peace, but felt it was better to fight two years more than to liave to fight again ien years hence. HORRIBLE GERMAN CRUELTIES. Times Service. Received Sept. 10, 5.5 p.m. 'London, Sept. 9, An officer, who writes from East Africa, describing the terrible German cruelties, states: We arrived at a village through which a German-led detachment of Askaris passed an hour previously. Wo found heaps of dead limbless villagers, and women with their breasts cut off.
