Ensign Green has arrived and confirmed the previously reported belief in the non-existence of Crockerland. He says Ptary made observations at a point 130 miles from the Greenland coast. Macmillan and Green travelled 150 miles, and observations in .clear weather convinced them that what Peary saw was a mirage. . THE LIVING WAGE Adelaide, Sept. 0. The President of the Arbitration Court has fixed the living wage for unskilled workers at !)s per day. . THE RENNET EMBARGO. London, Sept. 4, The owners of the rennet, the exportation of which was stopped, state that it was required for the manufacture ot cheese in general, and that they had contracted to supply the British Government, TFF. SUGAR DISPUTE. Brisbane, Sept. 5. The I'remicf lias announced that, owing to the sugar dispute, the Commonwealth is considering taking over control of the industry in all its phases.. NEW SOUTH WALES BUDGET. Sydney, Sept. 6. In the Assembly, Mr. Holman, in delivering the Budget, said that the year's .... was £101,(120,000, and" the actual surplus .1140,500. He stressed the fact that but for the war -expenditure, amounting to £513,000, the surplus would have been £550,000. Of the surplus, £50,000 was due to increased taxation, and during the last six roars the Government hail raised CI2.S0!),000 by direct taxation, the total loan expenditure during the same period being .til,0(10,000. EARLY CLOSING. Melbourne. Sept. (I. In the Assembly, Mr. Peacock announced the abandonment of the referendum on earlier closing of hotels, as it would clash with the conscription issue. The Government proposed to adopt direct legislation in place of the referendum. Brisbane, Sept. 8. In the Legislative Council, Mr. Hamilton stated that the Government had received a request from Mr. Pearce to take action in the matter of the early closing of hotels.
