TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting, which takes place to-day, will give a large number of Taranaki horses an opportunity to sport silk, and of those engaged the chances of Golden Grafton, Harbor Light, Maid o' Gowrie, and others are much discussed locally. Fields will be large throughout, and provided the present fine weather holds over to-day the meeting should be a most successful one. Racing jpens with the Hack Hurdles, ruu over a mile and a half, in which smart performers like Portland Lady, Golden March and Patronymic are engaged. If the fourteen go to the post it should be an interesting race. Twenty-four ire engaged in the Trial Hack Plate, though several recent winI ners are not eligible to start. This race is usually a trap for punters, but "hope springs eternal in the gambler's breast" they say. and the public will be found going strongly for Hymenaeus, Multaine, and Rio "for sure." Marton is likely to be a. warm order in the Hack Steeples. The Marton Handicap has closed with seventeen acceptors, which includes Maid o' Gowrie, whose name was omitted /com the telegraphed list. Multiplication, Montana, Ilarboi Light, and Hyllus are reported to be very fit, and possibly the first-namtjd may finish up public choice, Mr. T. K. Taylor won the North Taranaki Hunt Cup with Kiwitea, and the Manawatn Hunt Cup with Chnhan. The latter is engaged in the Eangitikei Hunt Cup to-day, and it will be interesting to note if the popular Kiwitea sportsman's luck will again hold good. Nineteen smart hacks are carded for the Electric Handicap. Taranaki is well represented, but down-the-line punier,. will probably go most strongly j for Perrier and Hylatus. Golden Graften may upset calculations, however. J Chortle has only to start in the RailI way Handicap to command a big I'olloivling, though reports as to the possibility ] of his seeing the most differ very much. Interlude is the Wangaiuii tip. She looks rather jolly, but in recent gallops mis been beating Tyson very badly. Ohiwia is a much improved neddy this season also, and Depredation is also very fit. If all they say about Ohiivia is correct the Elysian filly will run a great race. Another fine field will line up for the Tutaenui Welter. The Highden crack, Revalenta, has a lot of weight, but nevertheless may still take a lot of stopping, l-ioyal Park and Hvgia should also give a good account of themselves. Trainer Alex. Hall lias three horses engaged at the Marton meeting, viz., Moulu, Combustion, and Taringapito. Combustion will make his debut in the Hurdles to-day. B. Deeley will ride Tyson and Carmal Arch at the Marton meeting.. Mr. J. R. L. Stanford promises to start a warm favorite in the Matrimonial Stakes to-day Good luck! Taranaki horses entered at the Otaki meeting include Fidelio, Sylviaroa, Avon I'ark, and ilaniaroa. Trainer l'\ Tilley' s team for Marton comprises Mia Cnra, who won the, Railway Handicap there last year, Perrier and First Line. The latter is a three-year-old full brother to Ararat. Mia Cam is reported to have thrown off the soreness which was noticeable a few weeks back, but Perrier is galloping best of the trio and is said to be the stable's most dangerous candidate.
