BRITISH RED CROSS.
UNIVERSAL COLLECTION DAT. The local branch of the British Be 4 Cross Society has been forwarded a copfl of a circular received by the Central Depot Wellington, from Lieutenant-Col-onel Moorhouae, relative to the appoint* meat of a universal Red Cross Collec* tion Day through the British Empire. The following telegraphic appeal has been received by His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand, whe hoped that the appeal will meet with the same generous response as did the appeal last year:— I have tile honor to inform you that the British Hed Cross Society and the Order of St. John are once more proposing to appeal throughout the Empire by street aud other collections upon "Our Day,'' which has been fixed for October 19. The money received will be devoted entirely to our wounded soldiers and sailors from Home and overseas at the various seats of -war. TJie generous response which we received last year from all parts of the King's Dominions encouraged us to hope that the constantly increasing demand for our help may be met by « corresponding in< crease of generosity throughout the Empire. We shall be truly grateful to you if you will assist our work toy organising an appeal and sending the proceeds to us for the sick and, wounded at the front. Their Majesties the King aild Queen and Her Majesty Queen Alexandra are giving us their gracious patronage and they trust that you will also 'be able to see your way to help us in the same splendid manner as you did last year. (Signed) L&nsdowne, President British Bed Cross Society. (Signed) Plymouth, Superior of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Arrangements are being made oy the New Plymouth branch of the British Red Cross and the Order of St. John in co-operation to hold the collection local-' ly on Saturday, October 21. By a happy coincidence, this will be the anniversary of the great naval victory of Trafalgar, and we have every confidence that tho citizens of New Plymouth no less than their historic ancestors will their duty on that day.
