TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
JIOXTHLY MEETING. >' The usual monthly meeting of the Taranaki.County Council was held yesterday. Present: Crs. J. Brown (chairman), J. Andrews, J. Connett, A. Morton, A. E. .Laurence, J. B. Simpson, W. Binnie, 1). McAllum and C. Andrews CORRESPONDENCE. From district engineer, A. C. Koch, stating that the Council's complaint re water draining at Tariki station approach will be attended to. From the Moa Road Board asking the Council to merge the Allowing sections,' now part of Waitara West Road District, into the Moa Road Board District, sections 12!), 130, 131, IX2, 133. 207, l'O, 200, 117, US, 120, 121 Block XIII. Waitara S.O.—lt was decided to ask the Waitara West Board if they approved of the pioposal, also to inquire if the Moa Board were prepared to pay for the cost of the proposed merger. The Moa Road Board applied for sub- , sidies on the following roads, Lincoln, Richmond, Wortley, Windsor and York.
—Deferred until next meeting. The Moa Road Board wrote in reference to th« junction of Kohele and Tariki roads, stating they were agree;, ble to pay half cost of 4S feet of I'2-inch piping and labor in putting it in, and a third of the cost of drain.—The offer was accepted. Mr. J. G. Niehol, acting manager of Farmers' Co-op. Society, wrote stating the Society thought the approach from the main road to their yard gates should be metalled and rolled, thus liaving a saving effect on the wear of the main road. Messrs. A. Corkill, Jones, and 1). Todd, as a deputation, waited on the Council regarding the request.—Resolved "That ;he matter of metalling be left to the riding councillors to arrange." Messrs Govett and Quilliain wrote that the New 'Plymouth Harbor Board proposed to submit for sale a 21 years' lease of land as a site for ironsand works. In order to assist the Harbor Board to establish the ironsand industry they requested the carrying of the following resolution: " That this Council, being satisfied that the area of land containing 21 acres, part section SI 1, Grey district, and part section 137, Omata district, is not intended to be used for the erection of a dwelling house, resolve? that section 110, of the Public Works Act, 190S, shall not apply to such land." The Borough Council will also be asked to pass a similar resolution.—On the motion of Crs. C'onnett and Laurence, the resolution was carried.
Applications for the position of foreman were received from T. Breedon, Marton; H. Wyeth, Featherston; .J Ellings, Carterton; and P. McCurdy, Wnodville.—Mr. Wyetli's application was accepted. The Eltharn County Council wrote re the proposed abolition of toll gates. With the object of taking united action and it possible to arrive at a uniform scale of charges, an invitation was extended to the Taranaki County Council to send not more than two delegates to a conference to be held at. Eltliam on Wednesday, 13th inst.—Crs. Brown and Binnie were appointed delegates. Tlie Moa Road Board forwarded an account for £lO 15s lOd, being the Council's share of cost for renewing wooden culvert with ".oxicrete pipes and earthwork at junction of Mangaote and Tariki road;.—Resolved that Council pay half the cost o£ the Moa Board's account, £lB 13s. Lieut. C. W. Crutch, area officer, reported that heavy timber on the road near the Rewa Rewa Rifle Range bad slipped from the road on to the range property. The timber was the property of the Council. —To be attended to. ■T. D. Gray, secretary, Recruiting Board. Wellington, wrote in reference to the centra! executive to be set up in each j proup recruiting district, and hoping the present voluntary method will still be sufficient for the purpose—Resolved that every employee of the Council, eligible lor enrolement, be notified that he is re- j quired, not 'later than the 10th inst., to produce to the clerk of the Council his certificate of enrolment in the Reserve under the provisions of the Military Service Act. The Assistant Under-Secretary reported that Mr A. Crooke, S.M., had been appointed a commissioner to make an award between the Countv ami the Moa Road Board.—lt was decided that Crs. llrown ami Connett represent the Cqi neil. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. A. D. Grant, ir.-pector. in his monthly ' report, stated be had pro=ecuted live pcr--ons for e.i'.owi::;- stock to wander, and five persons for driving after sunset without liaht-. He had also effected repairs to wheel Wne'.cs and approaches to the Corbeit road bridge. FOREMEN'S REPORTS. No crushing had been done .as. r.icnth owing to repairs to crushing plant.
Moa Riding: 400 yards metal required I to reinstate Mountain road between Wai--1 puku-ite and Mangamau. ' Mangorei Riding: Wet weather had rmised roads to break up somewhat. Kent road and Korito roads require scarifying and rolling. Supports and stays for bridge at top of Kent road require renewing. Maintenance work was chiefly tho month's work at Waitara road. One mile of Egniont road near Mr. Upson's was absolutely worn out. Culverts lmd been completed on Dorset road. Settlers on Upper Egniont road had lent horses and drays for three days free of charge. Omata Riding: Excepting Omata Hill the roads were in good order. Casual labor had had to be employed to repair side, roads on account of the continual rain. Okato Riding: Work on the Upper Pitone road, authorised by the chairman, had been completed. The Kaihihi bridge required redecking. Work on the Ahu Ahu road was delayed in consequence of the wet weather. DANGEROUS CORNERS.
Some discussion ensued on dangerous corners within the County, and it was resolved that triangular boards be erected at certain places, viz., Mangorei riding, Baker road approach to Mangorei (New Plymouth side), Marsh's comer, Kent road. Waitara Riding: Bell Block corner, Bishop's and Egniont roads, ditch lower Henwood road, top of Allan's hill. Okato Riding: Top of Timaru hill. Oakura deviation, Oakura bridge, each end: boards to be made as per sketch by Cr. Morton. METAL SUPPLY The question of supply ot metal to the Council created some discission. Crs. Connett and Binnie moved "that rash riding atmcillor go into the question of maintenance metal with their respective foremen, and report at next meeting." Crs. C.' Andrews and MeAllum novel an amendment "that foremen be required to send in their metal requirements for ensuing year." The amendment was lost, the motion being carried. GENERAL. Cr, Binnie reported that lie had arranged to have the chimney at Okato toll house attended to. Mr. W. Good, Te Wera, is to bo requested to remove obstructions from stream running through his property. Tenders are to be called for 400 yards crushed metal for Manganiawhete. Mr. J. Poletti is to be requested to cut back trees on corner oi Pariti road. A vote of thanks was accorded to settlers for free labor on Upper Egniont road with their teams. | Mr. R. W. Giddy was appointed surfaceman Waitara road, vice E. Jordan. Accounts totalling £1037 8s (id (general expenses £283 10s sd, Moa Riding £302 5s fid, Mangorei Riding :C-!1 us, Waitara Riding £l3B 17s Bd, Oniat.i Riding £S7 Is fid, Okato Riding .£ 104 Us 9d, Hoani road loan account £SI 15s 8d), were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
