CORRESPONDENCE.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING.

To the Editor. Sir, —In your report irom the Hawera Star of the adventure of Mr. S. Turner during his mountain trip oil the Sunday, ,vou mention that lie had come to the New Plymouth House, having called there prior to his making the return journey to Dawson's Falls. This is not correct, as ;\lr. Turner never called at the House, If he had I certainly should have advised him not to make the trip to Dawson Falls per medium of the track, as, to my sorrow, I know it cannot be done in August, as two years ago, I also had to stop out all night, under Warwick Castle through finding the track impassable. Whilst oi> this subject, f might mention that were telephone communication always possible between the two houses (Dawson Falls and New Plymouth) it would no doubt save a lot of trouble or perhaps lives But on Sundays Stratford exchange is only open between the hour? of a and <> p.m., and as we have to get to each other through this exchange, of course, nothing can be done, except during that hour. When at the Fast Mouse I strongly advocated leaving eoniiuucation with all throe houses continuously open by some means that is not impossible, and perhaps this will be dons at some future date when one or two lives have been lost. Mr. Turner is a thorough climber and a very hardy mas, but had Sunday night been .a vild night such as we had here tiie following night he would assuredly have perished, and he might have had a belter chance had we known this end per medium of the telephone that he was astrav 011 the mountain. —[ am, etc,, H WILLIAMS. North Egniont House, September t.
