desks were saturated with kerosene, lnit tliis was absolutely untrue. Had the preparatory school heen set on'fire on that occasion it would not have caught the other buildings. The Coroner said that the evidence proved that the fire originated in the gymnasium where there was very little inflammable material. How it originated was another matter, anil it appeared that it had been fired by someone who had got into the building. The boys had been in the building during the day, and of course one of them might have been smoking. There was a very strong suspicion that the place was set on fire, but suspicion was not evidence, and he could not come to a decision that it was wilfully set on fire. He returned a formal verdict that the buildings connected to the New Plymouth Boys' High School were destroyed by fire on August 21, but there was no evidence to show hp w such fire originated.
