By Tclegranh— Press Association. Dunedin, Yesterday. The District Committee considered tli- 1 Sombrero case last night. The horse fell dead in a race at Riverton at Easter, and the Government analyst was a" opinion that death was due to arsenical poisoning. The Riverton Club failed to come to a decision, and the stipendiary steward took the matter up, the result being that an inquiry was held last night, and it was resolved that Alexander Chiaholm, practising veterinary at Otautau he disqualified for life, and "that Thomas Ambrose, stable lad, an employee of Hymers, the horse's owner, be disqualified for five years. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Marton on Wednesday. Winners were "hard" on Thursday. Bivouac ia not nearly ready yet. The Regio party received a bad shock at the Hunt Club meeting. Confusion in the first race, and contusion ever aftei was the fate of backers on Thursday. Movement is well named, as she proved when she won the Opunake Scurry from end to end. damp Guard was "commissioned" away from the course for the Hunters' Flat Race, but the distance, made him (and several others) very tired. If Ridicule keeps coming up to the starting barrier, Mr. C. Stockman .cannot blame the public if they treat the old fellow to a liberal dose of his own name. When Union Jack came down from Auckland there were rumors of "another Tim Doolan, buoys, so look out!" But it was only a rumor, as Hawera sports have learned to their sorrow. A correspondent in a recent "News" asks wdiat earthly use Hunt Club meetings are in winning the war. He should ask French where we get our cavalry horses from. Does he think they are hred from Maori weeds Expedition was labelled "can't lose" on Thursday, but the old chap disgraced, himself by running off. Had he kept his course he would have taken a heap of settling. Flying Camp ran up to his private reputation when he spread-eagled, the field in the Waihi Handicap. There were some smart horses. behind him. but several appeared to be "tied up" by the mud, or something! Captain Dick U a long while.winning a race. Pat Scally had the old gelding looking real well on Thursday, and he would have taken a power of beating had. ho stood up. Some ancient performers were seen out the Hunt meeting. Hydraulic, Groyboy., Ridicule, and several others look out of date on a racecourse—unless in a plough! The Press were faced with an unenviable task at the Hunt meeting, but thanks to. ninny'little attentions at the hands of the secretary and his assistants had a very fair time of it. Only those who have gone through the mill can appreciate a little attention. Caretaker Blewman had the track and. lawns in perfect order for Thursday's racing, but, unfortunately, the rain spoiled everything. The lawns will take a bit of attention before they get over Thursday's wretched ordeal. In spite of a trifle of venomous opposition the Stratford Gun Club got off its ' shoot" on Wednesday very successfully. The bitter remarks of several iwriters on the subject make one wonder why they don't agitate for the protection of rabbits! Lady Frisco (Sir Frisco Lady Gwynn). made no race of the Maiden at the Manawatu Hunt Club, and pulled out later in the day, ran off with the tho Waikanae Handicap in such style' as to suggest she is something worth watching. Unfortunately, she oannot start in the Trial at Marton, which is for horses that have not won a race of 25sovs "at the time of starting." The Maniapoto gelding Sir Fisher found his class when he narrowly defeated Sir Donald and Kurapai in the Fitzherbert Welter. He was the outsider of the trio. . Les. Traill was in good form at Awapuni, winning on Strategist and Crystal Star, both of which returned remunerative prices. Peach Pie . nd , Merry Jack were omitted from, the telegraphed acceptances for the Hunt Cup Steeples at Marton. Astor is being mentioned as a horse likely to get amongst the winners shortly. The Coronet gelding is said to be fairly well at present. The Marton Spring meeting takes place on Wednesday, and amongst the
numerous acceptances for the various events- are to' be found representatives from practically, every Taranaki stable of importance. Rewi Poto, Captain Miro, Maid o' Gowrie, Lord Multirid,, and Glenroy have dropped out of their engagements, but with Harbor Mght, Maniaroa, Crawford, Patronymic, Analogue, Astor, Golden Grafton, Depredation, Ticino, Flying Camp, Los Angelos, etc., engaged Taranaki holds a strong hand. The Marton Handicap bears an open appearance. Square Deal bends the list with 9.0, but punters should' prefer the chances of more leniently treated horses like Multiplication (8.8)," Montana (S.fi), and Harbor Light (7.11). The lastnamed to be very well treated indeed.' If Bon Reye could be got back to his old form it would be a shame what he would do to the opposition, and possibly, on a wet course be may have to be reckoned with. Amongst the lightweights Master Moutoa and Lady Anmi may find friends, though Multiplication and.Montana may be tho public's elect on Wednesday next. Marton continues to improve in his ossays over big fences and it looks as if he will be. made the medium of a big plunge on Wednesday next,
