STRATFORD.

BRANCH OFFICE. MUNICIPAL BUILDIXGS. (First Door on Left of Main Entrance.); 'Phone 233, Private 09. (From Our Own Correspondent.)' Stratford, Yesterday. The Egmont Club held a '"ladies? night last evening, when the building was filled by members of the fair sex, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy them-. selves with billiards, cards, etc. During the evening the president (Mr. J. Masters) fare-welled Captain J. B. Hine, who has been a member of the club since it» inception, and cheers were given for the, . departing member. A dance in the Fire Brigade Hall concluded n most pleasanft evening. The club's splendid orchestra, under the baton of Mr. E. J. Cottier,' rendered valuable services with orchestral items, whilst songs were given by] Mrs. Edrnondaon, Messrs Peters, and! Ret. F. (i. Moir, and a recitation by Miss Rowe, all of which were greatly appreciated.. Altogether, the evening will be long remembered by those who; were present. A good story is told of two prominent citizens who visited the Town Hall on Friday last in mistake for the Municipal ' Chambers, to record their votes on the loan proposals. One of the twain, tried every door, and at last started to kick the front door, remarking to several .passers-by that it was "agin the law" to have the doors closed during an election, When told -of his niista-kle', a wiser, but sorely tempered man found. his way to the proper voting .place. The Fire Brigade station, part of which was used for the borough offices after the municipal buildings were destroyed, has been renovated, partitions removed, and the largo room matchlined, and the station now presents a most cosy appearance. The whole of tile work was carried out by the firemen in their spare time, and they certainly) deserve credit for their labor of love. Mr. A. M. Spielman, manager of the Stratford abattoirs, is at present on holiday leave. Mr. .1. Rogers, inspector. in charge at Tokomnru Bay freezing works, is relieving him. There was a short sitting of the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, the, only civil case being a judgment summons case, in which no order was made. The case of E. 8., Stohr, of New Plymouth, charged with, driving a motor-car in a reckless manner, was adjourned, on the application of the police, till tUa 22nd inst.
