The death is reported of Mr. Vine, of Manaia. He had long been a settler in the district, and for a time was proprietor of the Hawera Opunako coach line. A Wellington telegram says that il is understood there is need of senior staff officers for the New. Zealand ExpHlition;iry l'orco at the front, and that there is a possibility that Brigadier-General : >ir A. W. Robin may go. Georgd G. Curtis, eldest son of Air, C. W. Curtis, of Hawera, died in Sydney, »n the 20th inst. Mr. George Curtis, who was only, 20 years of age, had been a patient stiff erer for about eighteen months, and for some time had been in New South Wales for the benefit of his health. ■ » The many New Plymouth -friends of Sergeant G. An informal gathering of the Himt Club took place in the stewards' room yesterday at the conclusion of the rates, when members seized tha opportunity of making a presentation to Mr. J, R, L. Stanford, who has officiated as judge, on the eve of his marriage, Mr, A. H. Haleombe, master of the Hunt, in making a presentation, which consisted ol a silver hot water jug, suitably inscribed, in a brief speech referred to the support that the recipient, vrhc was a thovougli sport, had always given the elnh, particularly afjiti races.
