MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31k(Before Mr. A. Crookc, S.M.) Daniel Fitzpatriek, for drunkenness in St. Aubyn street, was convicted and fined os, in default 24 hours. BREACHES OF COUNTY -BY-LAWS. ■Peter A. Opensliaw was charged by the Taranaki County Inspector (Mr. J. H. Quilliam) with driving a vehicle without. lights between the 'hours of sunset and sunrise. Mr. Quilliam said ho hail met defendant, wiic admitted the offence. Fined 10s, and costs 17s Gd. Lewis George did not appear to answer a- charge of riding a bicyele without lights in Devon line, Bell Block. Evidence was given by C. D. Grant, county inspector, and a fine of os and costs "28s was inflicted. Robert John Riley was charged with allowing four liorses to wander on Smart road on August 10, Defendant did not appear. The inspector deposed to having warned defendant-, in consequence of complaints received Defendant -hail told his neighbors iliat he had 110 feed in his paddock, and had to put the horse on the road. Fined 10s, and costs 2Ss. John Wilson was proceeded against for a similar offence. No appearance of defendant. Mr. Quilliam said that Wilson had been repeatedly warned by the county foreman at Tariki. Fined os and costs 28s. FURIOUS DRIVING. William Luxton was charged, on the information of the police, with driving a. motor-car over the intersection of Brougham and Devon streets at an unlawful pace. Constable Wroblonski gave evidence that defendant went over the crossing at a pace of 15 to 20 miles an liour. A motor-cyclist who was approaching had a narrow escape from being run over and killed. Defendant, who did not appear, was fined 10s and costs. EXEMPTION FROM DRILL. Lawrence Gilbert, a small boy, aged 15 years, applied for exemption from cadet drill, as he had to get up early in the morning to work in the News office, and 'had to go on some evenings to the Technical -School.—Exemption "'as granted.
