ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH.
' Congregational meeting, A meeting of the congregation of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church -was held on Monday night to take the preliminary steps towards the appointment of a minister to succeed the Rev. T. 11. Roseveare, who recently left for Cambridge. The Rev. E. Cullifoi'd, of Eltham, interim moderator presided. After reading t'he exhortation as prescribed by tlie Assembly, the Moderator mentioned the desirability of getting a new minister as soon 1 as possible, in order to preserve the continuity of the work. He explained that the first business for the meeting was to fix the stipend to be paid to the minister, and, in this connection, mentioned that a combined meeting cl the board of manager* and session had decided to make a recommendation to the congregation, which was that the salary be £250 for the first year suid £3OO after that if affairs were' satisfactory. Mr. W. Ogle then moved in accordance \vith the recommendation.—This was secanded by' Mr. R. Evans. Mr. N. K. MoDiarmid then moved an amendment that *■ straight-out stipend of £3OO be offered, and Mr. R. If. Rockel seconded this. Mr. \V. N. Ewing drew attention to the fact that in addition to the stipend a manse was provided, which was certainly worth £SO a year. The amendment was then put to the meeting, and 18 voted fur and 17 against it. However, on the motion being put whether that was the final expression of opinion of tlie meeting, IS voted for and IS against. , At this stage Mr. W. G. Reid moved n further amendment that the stipend be £275 per annum. The Moderator moved that the first amendment should first be dealt with, and be called for a division, which also resulted in a tie with 20 on each side. Mr. W. Simooek then seconded Mr. Reid's amendment that the 'Stipend he £275, but Mr. Cocker thought it should be made £275 for the first year and £3OO afterwards should circumstances permit. Mr. lieid would not adopt this, and his amendment was put and carried by 14 to 12. • - _ 'it was then unanimously decided that the stipend to be offered be £270 and the manse, the stipend rising to £3OO after one year if circumstances permit. A selection committee, consisting of tlie session and , Messrs Rockcl, Young, Cameron, Cocker, J. ~S, Leach, and Cox, was set tip.
