TURF TOPICS. ■By "Moturoa.") To-narrow's Hunt. Club meeting promises to be something of an out size in enjoyable race gatherings, and judging by the interest being shown the attendance should be very large. Acceptances are first rate all round, arid racing should be most interesting. Those who enjoy a good day's sport should not miss tliis meeting. King Victor pulled up lame after working yesterday morning, and is an unlikely starter in the Hunt Club Cup. Reported in yesterday's cables, the death of Mr. Dan O'Brien. "Dan" was well-known locally, being proprietor of the Criterion Hotel. for many years, Both he and his wife had many friends here, and the sympathy of all will go out to his''widow. "Dan" was of a quiet, retiring nature, but a good sportsman throughout. He owned, trained and raced many good horses, though without much luck. His chief claim to fame in the sporting world was through once owning the mighty Carbine. Carbine (Musket —Mersey), was bred in Auckland and was purchased as a yearling by the late Mr. Dan O'Brien for G2O guineas. As a two-year-old he ran five times in New Zealand, and won all his'races. He was afterwards sold to Mr. Donald Wallace for 3000»n5., and that's how "Dan" lust his fortune!

The entries received on Monday evening for the Wangaiuii .lockey Club's Spring meeting are first elass and include representatives of the majority of Taranuki stables'. They include Kewi Poto, Welcome Xuggct, Depredation, Los Angelos, Maid o' Cowrie, Lady Amai, Astor. Avon Park, Veto, etc., in open flat races, and Harbor Light, Styrav, Crawford, Patronymic, and Captain Jliro in the hurdle events. The hacks engaged include Fidelio, Madam Ristori. Bivouac, Gulden Grafton, Flying Camp, Henry Clay, Wood, Paraoa, Ticino, Antwerp, Analogue, and lesser lights. The "butter province" promises to be well represented at Wanganui on the 21st of September. The chief feature of the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting on Saturday was the "come back" performance of old Okaihau. who outjumped and outpaced the field in the Liverpool Steeplechase, and won very easily. Okaihau went lame after winning the Wanganui Steeples a couple of seasons back. His last win was in the Thames Steeplechase in December.

"Something like a race" was the Auckland Welter Handicap on Saturday, As the big field 'turned for home Glenopal and Genevieve were in front, followed by Bluostone, Fionnula, and Soultane. At the distance the five of them were in line, all being vigorously ridden. Over the final stages, O'Shea drew out with Blue-stone and got the better of a great struggle by three-parts of a length from Fionnula. who just beat Soultane. the others dose up, Pateonga broke a blood vessel in the race, and was pulled up. The Pakuranga Hunt Club only drew a trio of competitors—a poor response for a 22550v3. stake. Mollyhawk was a hot order, and capably handed by her owner, scored a popular victory. Eegio. who is engaged here to-mor-row, won the Ladies' Bracelet (H miles) on Saturday. Royal was a steaming hot favorite, but wa s one of the last to finish. Regio ran in behind for a mile, and then easily cut down the leaders, scoring handily from Kaiw' akahaere and Tiniroto.

The veteran rider "Bob" Hall once more enjoyed the sensation o£ riding a winner, and received a great ovation from jockeys and trainers on bringing Heather Boy back to scale after winning, the Maiden .Hunters' Steeples. Heather Boy was always near the front, and stayed on long enough to win nar.rowly from Tetigi. Tiniroto won the Hunters' Hurdles in good style. Half a mile from home, the son of Glongowrie and Lady Bell jumped to the front, and was never afterwards troubled. Brookfield (Clueten Did) was backed all over the Dominion for thd Maiden Hurdles, which he won in hoi. low fashion. Throe horses fell at the first fence, and two later on. Worcester who finished third, jumping in ludicrous fashion, but his pace between the obstacles very nearly gained his party second money. Pateonga went very near winning the Sylvia Park Handicap. He and Luperinc were fighting out a great Oni.-! when Penniless came with a magnificent ilate run, and catching the pair twenty [ yards from home,' won by a neck.
