EASILY ALARMED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Carterton, Yesterday. In consequence of certain reports which reached the authorities on Saturday, a force of police, supported by a body of artillerymen from Fcatherston camp, proceeded to one- of the Wairarapa districts to maintain order in case of a threatened demonstration against the family and property of the man whose identity is suspected in connection with the case of desertion at the front. On their arrival a considerable crowd of people assembled. There was evidently some excitement but nothing happened. • Carterton ■ residents were very much surprised on Saturday night at a visit from a strong force of police from Wellington and a picket of seventy-five from the Fcatherston military tamp. Inquiries elicited the fact that a rumor was afloat that Carterton residents and some solders intended to raid the former home .of the man who is said to have deserted to the German lines. The arrival of the police and the picket was the first intimation that anything of the kind was on foot. Everything was perfectly quiet and orderly, and no demonstration whatever was made. The military picket returned to camp at ten o'clock on Saturday night. Three police patrolled the grounds of the house where the alleged traitor's parents reside on Saturday nfght. Sunday, and Sunday night, but everything was quiet. The police have now left town. The rumor about the projected riot did not start in Carterton, the flrsi intimation here being the arrival of the police.
