SALVATION ARMY.
ANNUAL SELF-DENIAL APPEAL. Thi s year's self-denial effort of the Salvation Army in New Zealand will be made during September nnd October. This is one of the main sources of revenue that enables the Salvationists to continue, and extend their labor of love in the many fields of their activity. The present great war has made many and heavy calls on the whole of the Salvation Army as an organisation which have been cheerfully responded to. Throughout the Empire 1000 of its halls and institutions arc at the disposal of the Empire's soldier-lads for their comfort and help. In Ntw Zealand the Salvation Army's institutes at Trenthem and Featherston have recently been enlarged to meet the needs of the ever increasing number of men who avail themselves of the facilities and comforts offered. The institute for wounded soldiers recuperating at Rotorua. which was opened by Sir Joseph Ward, has proved an undoubted success, so much so that after two months of the opening it was found necessary to double its accommodation. Three Salvation Army chaplains are with the New Zealand forces oh active service and they are Well known for their selfsacrificing efforts, and work for the good of the men. One of the trio (Major-Chaplain Green) has received the Military Cross and promotion to the rank of Major for distinguished service. As the inevitable result of war is an increased number of widows and orphans. The Salvation Army in New Zealand is making the utmost preparation in its power to meet the increased demands on its service in this respect. Recently a new home for girls has been opened in Auckland, a boys' home at Teimika, another boys' home at Russell, and a home for young women at Dunedin. These and many other sew ventures to meet pressing needs, in add'tion to the maintenance of tha suecessful work done in the older and well known institutions and by missionary efforts constitutes the plea and justification for the annual appeal by the Salvationists to the generosity of the general public, well known as The Selfdenial Appeal.
