TIRPITZ BEATEN. PROMISCUOUS SUBMARINING REJECTED. Received August 20, 11.40 p.m. Washington, August 24. German reports state that Admiral von Tirpitz issued a manifesto strongly advocating the resumption of unrestricted submarining of merchantmen. His followers pushed the campaign so vigorously that they threatened to overthrow H'err von Bethmann-Hollweg fChancellor) and Herr von Jagow, but the Chancellor's policy was adopted in order to retain the goodwill of the United States and other neutrals.
THE GATHERING CLOUD DISCONTENTED POLITICIANS London, August 24. There is a grave political split. in 'Hungary. Count Appongi, in the Chamber, announced 'his withdrawal from collaboration with ' the Government. He affirmed that the moral unity of the Hungarian nation was unshaken, and M. The Supreme Court-Martial in Berlin dismissed Dr. Liebknecht's appeal against his sentence of 2% years' penal servitude for war treason, and increased the sentence to four years and one month and further deprived him of civil rights for six years. Dr. Liebknecht's sentence has created a deep impression in Germany. Socialists are indignant, and are organising demonstrations for his release, despite the military interdict, f A WAR LOAN JCGGLE.
