The Daily News. SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1916. THE EDUCATION BOARD.

The ntw Taranaki Education Board is shaping well, and bids fair to accomplish excellent work. Practically the first tiling it did was to meet the Hawcra school authorities anc 1 "talk things over'' with them with a view to understanding southern requirements, becoming acquainted with the methods used there, and co-ordinating the work of the old district with that of the new. Hav/era was not particularly keen on joining the Taranaki district, but we are, sure that with a closer association and a better knowledge of what the Board has done and is doing for education, they will change this view and become warm and loyal supporters of the Board. The Board proposes to tour the hinter-. land of the province and obtain a firsthand knowledge of the conditions obtaining in the backblocks. Nothing but good can result from such a visit. The Board lias declared against the frequent change of class books, and agreed to the use of a set of books recommended by a special committee. This will obviate a good deal of inconvenience and expense to parents. There is no reason why uniform books should not be adopted for the whole of the Dominion. The saving to parents would be. considerable, and the advantage to education appreciable. The Board has a substantial grievance against the powers that be for not providing another inspector for Taranaki. The two inspectors had more than they could efficiently get through in the old district; witli the extension of the boundaries, and the inclusion of several important schools.how can they be expected to do justice to the work? A third inspector is urgently needed, and it is to be hoped- the Board will give the Department no rest until another is provided. The Board, n.-i we have said, has made an excellent start, and if it continues the good work tho people of the province will have reasoli to be pratefuL *
