In addressing the jury at Wellington last week, Mr. T. M. Wilford told a legal joke to the effect following:—A certain judge had sentenced a certain prisoner, who was so certain of his innocence that ne told the judge he would rise up in judgment against him at the Last Day. There is a. growing feeling that potatoes are getting into pretty small compass (says a South Island correspondent). It is stated that Oamaru, a po-tato-growing centre, is practically bare, and that stocks in Willowbridgc and Studliolme, in South Canterbury, also po-tato-growing districts, are. becoming depleted. The yields were very much smaller than usual, and there have been heavy demands from Duncdin. Further north the majority of the crops were a failure. There is practically nothing to be had from South Canterbury, the Temuka stores holding only comparatively small lots. Southland is the only hope. Portugal,* who has decided to fight with the Allies on the French front, has x peace effective, of 32,000 and a war strength of about 150,000.
