BRUSSILOFF'S TOLL OF AUSTRIAN^ NOW EXCEED A MILLION. Received August 18, 5.5 p.m. Geneva, August 17. The Austrian Red Cross estimates the Austrian losses in Genera! BmssilorFs offensive on July 7 amounted to 697,710, whereof 70,000 were killed and 300,000 are missing. Austrian losses now exceed a million. POSSIBILITIES DISCUSSED. Paris, August 17. French experts are discussing the possibilities of an Austro-German counteroffensive frqm Kovel towards Lutzk, and a simultaneous attack against General Letchitsky's left wing. General'Brussiloff is prepared. GERMAN BID FOR POLISH* RECRUITS. Petrograd, August 17. A definite Russian pronouncement as to Poland's future is expected daily. The censorship has been relaxed, permitting frank discussion. Many writers point out that whereas Russia lias given the Poles vague premises, Germany has already'granted several ardently sought political rights. The tenor of the discussion has occasioned the widespread belief that Russia hopes to anticipate Germany's imminent proclamation of autonomy. It is fully believed that the Kaiser's visit to Warsaw within the next few days foreshadows the proclamation. Russian Poles are urging the Minister of the Inferior to take action, as they declare Germany is l-eally aiming at enlisting the Poles in the German army. It is estimated that 1,200,000 are fit for military service. MORE CAPTURES REPORTED. 'Petrograd, August 17. . A communique states: There arc artillery and rlllo duels on the whole front. General Bezohra/.ti' has, since the 16th, taken 7500 prisoners, 17 heavy guns, 20 field guns and 70 machine-guns. 1 KAISER'S VISIT TO WARSAW. Berlin. August 17. The Kaiser has departed for Wam\S presumably to ;ir,-claim Polish autonomy. THE POSITION UNCHANGED/ Received August 18, 7.20 p.m. Petrograd, August 17. A communique states: There is no change on the European or Caucasian fronts. AN AUSTRIAN REPORT. Received August 18, 7.30 p.m. Vienna, August 17. Official: Staraobozyna Hill, the capital oi the listiict, has been captured. The Russian advances southward of Moldawa and Ingper. on the Bistritza, failed. General Bothmer's and Mollis armies were engaged fighting, with the greatest violence, on Wednesday, between Prepelikni and Piedaki. The enemy, for twelve houis, uninterruptedly threw masses against us. Most of the assaults were broken before our sntangleinents. Wherever the enemy entered our trenches, as at Manajov, they have been driven out.
