A rather peculiar incident in reported from Kanicri, Hokitika. Some twelve months ago, Mr. ]'. Chesterman was carting straw in his shed preparatory to having it cut into chaff. One of the men employed in stacking the straw dropped some loose silver, amounting to 6s. All the money was. recovered "but sixpence. In due course the straw was cut into chaff, and later fed to the cows. Last week one of Mr. Chesterman's cows was killed, and 011 opening the carcase the lost sixpence was found The coin was bent over, and plainly bore the marks showing where it had been through the chaffcutter. Mr, A, Crookc, S.M., gave judgment by default yesterday morning in the cases of Kay and Bergman v. J. Rangi. £2 10s (costs 15s), and D. Hutchcn (Mr. A, C. Lawrcy) v. S. Dale £l2 12s 4d (costs 35s 6d). Cooke and Lister v. E. Croot, a claim of .-£l4 Is was, on counsel's application, adjourned for a week. In the case, A. Sanson v. P, E. Humphries, a claim for £ll 4s, defendant appeared, and stated that he had already paid the amount, but he had not paid interest or costs. He was willing to pay these if there was a hope of taking action against plaintiff. His Worship said the matter liad jiothing to do with him, and ordered defendant to dispense with 31s 3d (interest Is 3d, and Court costs 30s), In summarising his Worship the Mayor's remarks that were addressed to the tramway deputation on Monday evening, we took Mr. Burgess too liter' ally, and reported him as having said that "when he came into office it was with the idea of clearing up mistakes." What the Mayor intended to convey to' the deputation and to the Council was that lie had undertaken . the Mayoral dutie.3 with the intention of clearing up all the work that there was 111 hand before the new body came into existence. The appeal of the Government for subscriptions to the war loan is twofold. First it invites every individual who can do so to help in the fight against the Germans. Many thousands of men and women who cannot otherwise give material. assistance towards winning the war have here an immediate and a not difficult way of helping. They may participate iu the fight. They are offered the privilege—and it is no small privilege—of doing something real and practical for the defence of honor and civilisation in which the Allied Powers are engaged to-day. It is a'stupendous struggle against the most gigantic and powerful military machine the t world has known—a machine as ruthless as it is formidable, and one that still threatens the destruction of all that decent men and women hold dear. Appearances are that the forces of civilisation are gaining the upper hand, that ultimate victory over the infamous foe is a moral certainty; but no calculation of the position that is founded upon solid judgment can evade the conclusion that a huge effort lies between now and the day of peace. Every pound, every shilling, that is cast into the war chest improves the prospect of victory and tends to bring it nearer.—Lyttclton Times. The annual general meeting ot the members of the congregation of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church will be held | this evening. j
