General Kuropatkin lias been appointed Governor-General of Turkestan. Mr. .T. H. -S'lieath has been elected chairman of the newly-elected Ilawke's Bay Education Board. In a cable message to Lady Carroll, Sir James Carroll states that he is about to pay a visit to Ireland. A cable message states that Mr. Lloyd George has arrived at Paris and conferred with M. Briand.
The British Government is establishing n Labor Advisory Department under Mr. Henderson.

The Daily Chronicle states it is understood that Lord Lansdowne will shortly resign, 011 the grounds of illhealth.
A cablegram reports that Captain Kinder, of the Suffolk Regiment, a resident of Auckland, has been killed in actioji.
Mr. Fred Pirani has been re-elected chairman of the Wanganui Education Pourd by five votes to three, Mr. McIntyre being the other candidate. Rifleman Percy John Mason (next-of-kin, Mrs. A. Mason, Devon Stret East), who was previously reported dangerously ill i s now pronounced out of danger. It was remarked at the Veterans' Association meeting on Saturday, that of the old 43rds, the only remaining members in New Plymouth were Colonel Ellis, Messrs. W. F. Brooking and Lambert.
The death occurred at V.eale Road on Friday last of Mr. John Eva, aged 70 years. The deceased, who was a son of the late ilr. Philip Eva was born in New Plymouth, and had resided in the district all his life. He was a possessor of the Maori War Medal.
Private Claience Vile, only son of Mr. Fred H. Vile, of Te Awamutu, and formerly of Mastcrton and Pahiatua, was killed in action in France on July 28. The deceased, who was twenty-*... "«ars of age, was a nephew of Messrs. A. i,. and R. G. Vile.
The death occurred on Thursday night of a well-known member of the Maori race in the Fcilding district, Mr. R. Durie, of Aorangi. Mr. Durie was chief of the Maori tribe in the Feilding district; and a member of the Maori Council of the West Coast.
Rev. F. A. Crawshaw, who left New Plymouth some months ago to take up work at Norfolk Islands, has resigned his position with the Melanesiiin Mission and returns early in September. He will relieve Rev. E. C. Cook as curate at St. Mary's Church, during Mr. Cook's absence with the reinforcements. News ivij received in Eltham on Saturday, that Private John Kelliher, an ex-F.lthamite and a member of one of the early Australian contingents, had been killed in action. Ho was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kelleher, of Rolokare Road, Eltham, to whom much sympathy is expressed in their bereavement. Another son is with the New Zealand forces.
Mr. T. W. White on Saturday received advice from Hon. .Tames Allen that his'son, Private Norman G. White, had died of wounds on August !). Private White left with the 10th Reinforcements, and was wounded on July 20, being subsequently removed to the leicester Infirmary. Mr. White wa.s advised on Friday that his son was danger-, ously ill, as a result of gunshot wounds in ■the legs.
