WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent)," Waitara, Saturday. A most enjoyable time was spent in the Clifton Hall on Thursday evening, when a fancy "paper dress"' 'ball was held in aid of the funds of the Waitara Municipal Brass Band, which will benefit thereby to the extent of £3O lis !)d. The hall was prettily and tastefully adorned with flowers and other paper decorations. The grand march, which was participated in by SO me CO couples, commenced at 8 o'clock, and made quite a striking and interesting display. The march concluded with the lancers, the ladies in each set wearing the same style of dress. The march was headed by Misses W. Tate, Calgher, Purdie and Kilpa trick, who represented "Old English Maids," and were followed by Misses J. Melsaacs, M. Jenkins, B. and A. The tables seated 30 couples at a time, and the guests were waited on bv members of the ladies' committee. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr. i 1 owler and t'he Band, with extras by 'Messrs Taylor (Waitara) and Taylor (Wanganui). The onerous duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. If. Eagleton. Tie ladies responsible for the success of the evening were Mesdames Hellier, Harlin, Jerard, Ulander, J. Telfar, W. Skelton, H. Spurdle, VI. Langman, A. Andrews, J. Pttrdie,' W. The Committee of the East End Beach Society have decided to hold a euchre party and dance in aid of funds which are urgently needed to enable the laying down of water pipes. At the public school on Iriday, Miss A. Bernsten, who has resigned from the I teaching staff, was the recipient of a Uumber of presents from her feilow teachers and scholars as marks of ap- ! preciation and esteem. The teachers' gift took the form of a fountain pen, Standards V and VI., a brush and comb, .Standard 111. and IV., wristlet watcb, i Standards I. and 11.. silver jewel case, | Master Harry Wakely, book of poems, ; Miss Patricia Griffey, a handsomely peu|painted table centre, and Mis.-, Jean Aniderson, a silver vase. Miss Bernsten has proved herself a great favorite with | the scholars, aud her departure from the 'school will be greatly regretted by the I children and staff.
A number of local Maoris who possess musical talent of no moan quality have joined together, and will be giving a concert soon in aid of the Belgian fund.
