There was intense excitement in the Chicago wheat pit consequent on the Government report that the 1010 yield of the United States was 35S million bushels less than in 1915. The market was also affected by the news of the black rust in Canada. Fortunes were made and lost in a few hours. Heavy foreign buying shot up prices. The (lay's net gain was 11% cents per bushel. Closing prices were September options 1442 cents (Gs), December 148 cents (Gs 2d). - - •--- LOAN & MERCANTILE AGENCY. CO.'S • REPORT, The New Zealand Loan and Mcrcantila Agency Co., Ltd. (Stratford branch) report as follows: On Friday, July 28, we held our usual monthly sale at our Tarata yards, when we had a moderate yarding of cattle, and the following prices were realised: Two-year heifers £4 17s 6d, yearling heifers £2 14s, mixed weaners £2 lis Gd to £2 13s Cd, dairy cows £9 5s to £l2 12s, two-year in-calf heifers £5 lis, empty heifers £5 9s to £0 ss, store cows £5 7s (id, bull £4 ss. We also sold stock on account of the following vendors, for the benefit of the Tarata Patriotic Committee:—V. M. Standish, fat wether, purchased by E. •I. Ible for £1 12s (kl, re-ofl'e:'ed and purchased again by same buyer for £1 128; J. Paterson, seni\, store eow,'purchased by M. .T. fiartigan for £5 7s (id; E. J. Ible, dairy hujll, purchased by M. J. Hartigan for £4 ss; A. Corkill, six Angora goa'ts, purchased by N. B. Fletcher for £7 10s the lot; A. Eraser, one dog, purchased at 5s and re-offered by the following: R. Lovell (twice), I\ J. Webb, Paynter Pros., I-lerinan Sander. M. J. Hnrtigan,. A. W. Guilford, Blackburn Bros, and W. A. Hewitt. The Tarata 'Patriotic Fund benefited to t'he extent of £22 12s as a result of the above donations.
On. Monday, July 31, we held a clearing sale on account of Mr. J. T. Ross, Upper Hastings road, Lowgarth. The day turned out very wet ar.d stormy, but notwithstanding this there was a very large attendance ot the public, and good competition for all lines offered, more "particularly for the cows. The following are some of the prices realised: Plough £O, tripod harrows £5, disc harrows £7 15s, mower £9 10s, spring cart £9 10s, gig £ll )os, sows £4 7s' lid lo £7 7s Cd, weaner pigs His (id, fat ewes 29s lOd to 34s (id. horses £l2 5s to £25; cows showed condition and had a good name, small and defective bringing £8 5s to £lO, good £ll 10s to £l3 15s, best £l4 to £lB 10s, the herd averaging £l4; yearling heifers. 80s. The household furniture and sundries met. with keen competition and sold at full values. On Friday, -It'll inst., .we held a clearing sale on account of F. J. Curry, Rowan road. The weather was rough and cold, but the attendance was good, and prices were very favorable to the vendor. Sows made £0 10s, store cows £8 to £lO ss. dairy cows £ll to £l3 10s, good cows £l4 to £l7 10s, plough £(i. The herd of cows averaged £l3 ss. On Tuesday, St.li inst., we held our usual fortnightly sale at our Stratford yards. We had a large entry of store stock, also 750 sheep. The demand for both cattle and sheep is somewhat easier, while vendors are still high with their reserves, which makes it difficult to effect sales. However, we had a good clearance, of cattle, but no demand for sheep.
