White to say that his son, Private Norman G. White, is suffering with gunshot wounds in the.legs, and is dangerously ill at Leicester Boy&l Infirmary, England. The Gazette announces the appointment of Mr. Thomas Brook to be Commissionei lor Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor for the Wes tland -and Diftrict.
In yesterday'* casualty list appeared the name of Private W. L. Oliver, wound; ed on July 2!) (next-of-kin, Mrs. Louiw. Oliver, Kohi, Waverley, mother). The engagement is announced of Miss Keitha Loatham, youngest daughter of Dr. Leatham, to Mr. Trevor Simpson, o; the Herald Jiterary staff.
A recent list of wounded men contains, the names of Privates G. .1. Ratoliff, whose next-of-kin in Mr. A. Payers, Ohura, and Private W. Marshall, a sou of Mr. A. J. Marshall, Opftnake.
The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, .M.L.C., who was chairman of the Wellington Education Board last year, has been elected chairman of the reconstituted board, which controls Marlborough 1 as ivell as Wellington.
Corporal S. J. Revington-.lones. Auckland machine-gun section, who it reported killed in action on July 2J, was one of the many representatives of the U.S.S. Company at the front. Previous to enlisting he was acting as purser in their service. He left with the, Main Body, and was through all tbe'fightilig in the Gallipoti campaign.
Mr. I". D. Kcsteven, of Christchurcli, lias established, it is believed, a world's record as captain of a rowing club, having he'd that office in the Union Rowing Cliil> for twenty-eight years, being first elected to the position in 18SS. On Mom 'day ni«lit he was the recipient, of hearty congratulations at the annual smoke concert of the club, and the president (Mr. A. E. Craddock)', on behalf of the members, presented iiim with a gold watch, suitably inscribed.
There was a very large attendance last night at the Fitzroy l'ire Brigade station, when ft valedictory social was tendered to Auxiliaries Robert Tanner and Waiter Gunson, who are about to leave on active service at the front. J>n ic: ™- tendent Bellringer, of the New Plymouth Brigade (of which the Fitzroy Bligade is a branch), presided and a mosi enjoyable evening was spent, the toasts being interspersed with musical items. Auxiliary Gunsoi was presented iMtn a wristlet watch, and Auxiliary Tanner, who was prevented from pie?ent, will receive a similar presentation.
