CADLFIELD CUP. Australian-N.Z. Cable Association. Received August !i. 10.10 p.m. Melbourne, August 9. Determination has been scratched for the Caullii'ld Cup. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The ex-New Zealand horseman, H. Cairns, who piloted Van Iloiuereigh to victory in the Australian Hurdles oil Saturday, was also successful on Clontaft in the same race two vears a n o. Pursefiller has been showing in and out form in her schooling tasks of late, but Mr. Lysr.ar, who. won the race with Hurakia. last season, hopes that the mare will be caught in her humor when the Grand National Tlurale race comes up for decision next week. F. Coleman arrived in Wanganui on Monday and went out to Fordell the next day to school Leonta. The big horse has just shaken off a cold, but he fenced well, and appeared to be in great fettle. Leonta should reach Eiccarton to-day. Rangi Thompson is mentioned as the liketv pilot of .Queen's 'P'osb in the Grand National Steeples. ''Tartar" Julian will ride Ngatoa in the same race, and "Jerry'' O'Counell will be on Styrax in the big hurdle race. Nones has been withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup. Braeburn iias made a good recovery from bis recent troubles, and one morning last week jumped fourteen big fences in perfect style. Such a bold jumper must be given a chance over Riccarton country. In reply to ''Sport": Leonta (10.13) was runner-up to Hurakia (!).!)) in the. last Grand National Hurdles. Master Lupin (10.2) was third. The distances between the horses were three lengths and two lengths respectively. Leonta carried 10.S when he ran third to Crib (10.8) and Pursefiller (10.11) in the Final Hurdles at Trentham last month. Leonta finished very fast., and was about a length and a haif behind the winner. A southern scribe considers that the Winter Cup candidate Heeltap will hardly be caught at his best next week. He is "dicky" in one leg. Evidently a tap on the heel, or something! Last week all horses were a year older. That is to say, all horses up to six-year-olds. According to the Turf Register horses beyond that age are like ladies—owning up to no more! Thus the "aged'' division. Stated in Sydney papers that "Tod" Hewitt has definitely decided to take up his residence in New Zealand again, The much-travelled Sloaner lias few equals as a horseman, and should get any amount of riding. Hawera sports are begging, borrowing, and (perhaps) stealing money to follow the hunter Unior Jack at the Grand National meeting. Since C. Jackson brought him down from Auckland he has done .well, and judging by liis Ellerslie form Jack is some good. Weights for the Dannevirke steeplechase meeting are due to-day, and acceptances for all events and entries for the Trial Stakes must be in on Wednesday, August 10, at fl p.m. The Taranaki Hunt Club will take entries for the forthcoming meeting up till 9 p.m. to-morrow, Friday. The detailed programme appears in another column, and" the good stakes offered should ensure fine entries. If any argument were necessary to convince sporting folk that the totalis-1 a tor is the best means for speculation that put forward by the president of the Victoria Racing Club should suffice. He showed that the Canterbury Jockey Club received nearly three times ag much from the totalisator as the V.R.C. did from the fat Bar Vons. The V.R.C. liafl to give nearly double the stakes of the C.J.C., and had a population ten times greater to work on. What a good wicket ! the bookmakers are on! No wonder ! they live on the fat of the land*
