TURF TOPICS The balance-sheets of the Taranaki Jockey Club, Eginont Racing Club, and Waimate Flair* Trotting, Club,, published during the week 'in the News, fchows that these Clubs have had a very successful season during the racing year 1915-1910. Considering the present' upheaval the result has been remarkable, and says much for the good management of the various committees and secretaries. In consequence, the patriotic funds have benefited to the tune of several thousands of pounds, much of which would have been expended through less commendable channels. These clubs are to be congratulated on their success, and "Moturoa" wishes them an even more successful year in the season 1916-17.
The Waimate Plains Trotting Club is still considering the advisability of laying down a track on the A* and P. Grounds, but the movement doe? not .wm to get much '-'forrader." Those who. control the race meetings held under the club's auspices are energetic enough on occasion—mostly during" the few days adjacent to the annual trottin" mreting-but their enthusiasm then seems to lie dormant until the next meeting rolls along. Tararraki has shown that it is prepared to adopt this branch of sport, and it is up to the oliicials of tiie W.P.T.C. to see that the public is properly catered for. It is generally acknowledged that the Egmont Racing Club course (kindly lent by that body) is altogether unsuitable for trotting, and the sooner the Club nixes things up with the A. and P. Association the better.
What earthly good a proposed change of date of the Waimate Plains T.C. meeting from Easter Monday till the week following the Wanganui T.C. meeting would do beatv this scribe entirely, and it is pleasing to note that the proposal was quickly sat upon. Easter Monday is a blank holiday in Taranaki, and the change to that date has resulted in a doubled attendance and a doubled totalisator turnover. The fields were excellent on the occasion of the last meeting, and even should a few horses be ralcid iu from the Wanganui meeting, the s-iorting public of Taranaki—which supplies the "ammunition" .o keep the game going—has every right to be considered
The North Taranaki Hunt Club -will merit the attention of horse-owners and trainers during the coming week, entries for all events to be decided at the Club's meeting on August 31, close on Friday next. The programme has been freely advertised, and no doubt those interested have made themselves acquainted with details. The hunters' events are: North Taranaki Hunt Club Cup Handicap Steeplechase, of ISfiaovs and cup; Hunters' Handicap Flat Race, of 40sovs; Ladies' Bracelet Maiden Handicap Steeplechase of 45sovs. and a bracelet; and the Lepperton Hunters' Handicap Hurdles, of SOsovs. The open events are well endowed with stakes, and comprise: Stratford Hack Handicap, of SOsovs; Waihi Hack Handicap, of Tasovs; Urenui Hack Handicap, of (iOsovs; and Opunake Hack Scurry, of oOsovs. Mr. Geo. Morse is iuuidicapper, and Mr. C. O'Connor will attend to the starting.
To-night entries will be taken for all events to be run at the Dannevirke Racing Club Steeplechase meeting, on August 23. The programme, which appears in another column, is one that should commend itself to local owners. Two open events, three, jumping races, and o trio of hack flat events complete the menu.
Sporting scribes have been baffled in the attempt to sort out a rider for ]>onta in the Grand National Hurdles. This :-cribe is informed that F. Coleman ie't Sydney on Thursday last, under engagement to pilot Mr. T. Bristol's jumper. ''Bronco," as he is popularly termed, has been doing big tilings on tile other side, and being a strong horseman should handle Lconta well.
Darby Paul's displays over big country at Kiccarton have been of the most ludicrous style. The veteran has grown 'cunning 1 , and be bates big fences like several well known local beer sparrers bate the Anti-Shouting Bill. Mr. It. Hughes has a nice filly by lilackstone (Grafton Consistence), fiom Queen Diary (by Trenthmn), which be bjuglit in 'Stralia on' his retent jaunt to those parts. Blackstone, by the way, is a half-brother to the laranaki Cup winner Glenullin, and at the stud has sired My Lawyer and other ton-notehers.
The Nationals are still the chief topic of conver.-ation. The W'aimai—Crown Pearl double is at a ridiculous price, and short prices are quoted with Wai-n-ai—Te Onga, Waimai —Lconta. etc. Fancy accepting "sixteens" about the ]'-ost likely of the lot! Uold So'ult is in the boom for the
Winter Hup, the Porirua noddy having "cgiatorcd some fine gallops recently. In Wellington tlicy talk nothing else, 1 hough in other parts Multifual, Rorke's Drift and Sedd-ul Balir are occasionally ouotcd.
Messrs. Tucker Bros., of Wanganui. sold up their thoroughbreds on Wednesday last. There was nothing of much value in the lot, and bidding was very dull.
Mr. L. Irvine, a returned Anzac, was successful in "outing" twenty odd apt lieants for the position of caretaker of the Waverlcy racecourse. Eligible and Sasanoll' are said to be galloping finely at Hastings. They are booked to leave for Sydney next week.
Fagot appears to be one of the fittest 'chasers at Kiecarton at the present tune. He should pick up a good race there shortly. Sonltikoff, who has gone wrong, was recently sold to Mr W. Patterson, of Motiti Island, for thirty sovs—or, rather, thirty dirty pound-notes.
Mr Jas. Bull bad a bit of bad luck with bis recent purchase, Patronus, the stallion succumbing to an attack of colic the other day. Patronus bad only limited chances, but left some fair performers in Taranaki.
