Mr. Asquith received a deputation, representing one and a quarter million workers in the Miners' Federation, the National Union of Raihvaymen, and the Transport Workers' Union, who urged that the Government should see that the standard and conditions of life secured by trade unionists were not allowed to fall on account of labor being cheapened by the Hooding of the market by discharged soldiers and sailors. The presidents of the three Federations urged that the.trade union practices before the war be restored when peace is made; that all soldiers who so desired should be granted an extended furlough on full pay, and that all men and women employed as 'substitutes should be given other work at standard living rates of full maintenance. If exsoldiers were unable to procure work they must be assured of maintenance, MR. ASQUITH'S REPLY. Mr. Asquith said the problems raised were the most serious and complicated ever presented.
