The Daily News. SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1916.

THE NEW EDUCATION BOARD. The newly constituted educational district of Taranaki has for its first Board a personnel that may bo regarded rs thoroughly fitted for the important duties it will have to discharge. Every one of the six members elected by the Sehoi.l 'Committees of the district has had considerable experience in the administration of educational or other

public affairs, while sufficient members cf the old Board have been re-elected to ensure an easy transition from the old order to the new, and the presence of Mr. Dixon, who has done such excellent service on the Wanganui Board, should be invaluable in co-ordinating the best and most progressive features of the systems of the two Boards. It was somewhat of a surprise to find that Mr. A. Morton failed in his candidature, but he ha s the satisfaction of knowing that h;' work in the past is thoroughly appreciated, and that his ward is represented by two of the greatest educational enthusiasts in Taranaki. It may be eafoly assumed, that the new Board will be actuated by the spirit of thoroughness and progressiveness. Already the Taranaki district, in its old restricted area, held a high place in the annals of dominion scholarship, and with its extended area, comprising the southern portion of the province, its future in tnat respect should be brilliant. Strength, broadmindedness and administrative ability are the prominent characteristics of the new Board, and the members may be trusted to be sympathetic with the committees so as to ensure the harmonious working of the educational machine in this district. Concurrent with the constitution of the new Board is the advent of change in the inspectorial department, Mr. Morton comling here ,a,s senior inspector. We do not anticipate an upheaval of methods, for such a course would be ilisastrous, but we may justly expect an added impetus to progress on sound lines. Much will depend on the choice of the members for the position of chair■nan. The essential qualifications for that office naturally restrict the field to two or three, but we may safely leave the matter in the Board's hands, 'onfldent. that the; will select wisely

and well, hearing in mind tho large fvtent of tlie district, and tho large amount of time, energy, tact, and personality required, , Wc heartily wish tiic new Board a successful and useful term of oliicc.
