TARANAKI 48 MEN SHORT

Mr. W. F. Massev, President of the Recruiting Board, lias forwarded the .following' statement to the press: The position with respect to recruiting for the 20th Reinforcements is, on the whole, quite satisfactory. Already several of the group areas have either provided their quota or more than their quota, and indications point to the shortages now shown in the remaining groups being made good before the draft mobilises foi training in the last week of this month. The official figures of the en'istments for the infantry, all other arms of the service being full, as at date of Friday, July 28, are as follow:

Group No. 1, Auckland C'ity, complete. Group No. '2, Paeroa, shortage Group No. I!, Whangarei, shortage 41. Group No. 4, Hamilton, shortage 43. Total shortage for Auckland Military District, 89.

Group No. 5, Wellington City, surplus 5. firoup No. fi, Palmerston V., shortage 62. Group No. 7, Napier, shortage 32.

Group No. 7a, Masterton, shortage IC. (Iroup No. S, Hawera, shortage 48. Total shortage for Wellington Military District, 133.

Group No. 9, Christeliureh Citv, surplus 18.
