BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Works Committee of the Bnrmigh Council was held on Monday night,' Present: The Mayor (Mr C. 11. Bur-cssi, Councillors L. M. Monteath, F. E. Wilson, J. S. S. Medley, A. 11. Johnstone, W. A. Collis. W. V. Short, F. J. Hill, W. J. Smith, E. Griffiths, J. T. Manui.v, A. E. W atkins. ENGINEER'S RESIGNATION. Mr'. E. O. Clayton, borough engineer, wrote tendering his resignation. The resignation was accepted. FOREMAN. Considerable discussion ensued over tie- appointment of a foreman. The engineer recommended that Mr. S. Hooker be retained, and that Mr. McKay be given notice in terms of his engagement. Councillor Smith moved that recommendation of the engineer be given effect to.—Councillor Griffiths seconded. Councillors expressed the opinion that the question should he left until the new engineer was appointed. The Mayor thought the question should lie dealt with that night, especially as the matter had been ventilated in the press, which he thought was unfortunate. Councillor Johnstone moved an amendment that the mutter be deferred until the new engineer is appointed. He thought if was a matter entirely for the engineer to decide on his foremen and workmen. Councillor Medley seconded. In reply to Councillor Griffiths, the engineer said lie did not think there would he enough work for two foremen during the next two months, when the new engineer would take up his duties. The 'amendment was lost, and the motion carried. HOLIDAYS. Councillor Wilson moved that all permanent hands who do not receive overtime pay be granted two weeks' holiday per annum at the discretion of the engineer. The motion was carried WELLINGTON RAILWAY STATIONS. A communication was received from Wellington asking the Council's assistance in the movement to have all trains on the Manawatu line run to and from Lambton Station instead of Thorndon, as at present. The Mayor stated that lie had replied that while he. recognised the great convenience to the travelling public, if the change was effected, lie preferred not to express any opinion as to the feasibility jlf the proposal or whether it was work lliat should be undertaken during wartime. The Mayor's action was approved. GENERA! rue caretaker at the reservoir was granted an increase of salary from £2 to f.6 10s a week. Mr. R. Day, sanitary inspector, re-po'-.od: ''The dust service has been in c:.istenc(< now long enough to enable everybody to provide proper tins. Some people have failed to do so. I propose to lake the necessary steps to enforce the by-law in this matter, and to issue summons in each case where receptacles are not up to regulations." In replv to Councillor 'Medley, the ' Mayor said he thought the statement as to what money was left for work at Westown would be ready by next Monday, when the requests of the Westown deputation would be fully investigated.
