Investigation!? indicate the existence of a gigantic system of graft among the Xew York police and the white-slavers. The. grand jury returned indictments against five detectives charged with bribery, all attached to the Tenderloin district, and had been engaged in fighting the white slavers. The prosecutor premised startling disclosures.
The investigation was tlie outcome of a grand ball, for which the Tenderloiners were compelled to purchase large blocks of tickets, and it is alleged that the pelice participated in the proceeds.
HIGH PRICE OF PAPER,
Washington, July 23.
The Senate lias appointed a commission to investigate the high price of paper and has invited (1000 newspapers to submit information. The commission will open on August 1.
MUNITIONS ORDERS DECREASE.
New York, July 23,
The New York Times, discussing the decline of war orders to America, points out that one company alone lias dismantled an enormous plant, discharging 2500 employees, and the British inspector is leaving because British manufacturers are able to supply the demand. The value of war order stocks is also affected by the Russian successes on the East front and the Franco-British advance <jji the West, which has led many to foresee an end to the war in the near future,
