Inspector Mcfiratli. of Xapier, is at present on a visit to Xew Plymouth. II". Xorman R. Cleland, of Ilurimoana. has been appointed by the Oiovernmont a member of the Taranaki Land Hoard to succeed Mr. Ooxhead. Stanley flurr and C. T. Granville—who returned to Xew Zealand by the s.s. Rotorua, returned to Hawera en Saturday evening. They were ollicially received by the Mavor. Two Xew Plymouth lioys. f!. 1\ Walls and W. I<\ Marton, also arrived by the same train. Messrs Belcher and Monteath, of the Land Transfer Ofllce, leave for Trentham by the mail train this morning. On Saturday Mr. Sturtevant, on behalf of their fellow-officers, presented them respectively with a wristlet watch and 4 silver pencil-holder. Owing to a number of men enlisting, slight alterations have been necessary in the Customs ollice. Mr. Good, the examining ollicer, has been moved to Wellington and the Collector of Customs, Mr. K.' B. D. Eyre, will take over his luties in addition to his own. M". - . Duncan McKay, who is on final 'leave from Featherston camp, was farewelled on Saturday night by Mr. C. Carter and stall', and presented with a safety razor as n small memento of esteem, all present wishing him God speed and a safe return.
Word has been received in Kelson Unit Lieutenant Atliol Hudson, son of tlie late Dr. Hudson and Mrs. Hudson, of Tapawora. lias been killed in action. Lieutenant Hudson was an old hoy of Xei-on College and Waitaki High School. lie was selected in lill.'i as Rhodes Scholar from Victoria College. The death is announced of Mr. Edwin Herbert, recently manager of the Bank of Xew South Wales. Marton. and formerly manager of the hank at Bulls. Mr. Herbert was engaged in linaneial journalism in London in his youth, hut .■eliw|iiislieil it and came to Kcw Zealand, where he joined the stall' of the bank and remained in it for forty years. He was highly esteemed. Mrs. R Shirley, of Oaonui, lias received word that her son Willie was hit by a bullet in the chest about a week after he \va< in the trenches. It. was a clean wound, and nut likely to permanently doable him. Mrs. Shirley sent three sons to the front, Frank was hadlv hit at the landing ut (itillipoli, Willie has also been injured, and Hercules is serving in the trenches in L'':ance. Miss Ihirr, of (iisbome, has been appointed principal of the New Plymouth (lids' High School. Miss Ilarr interviewed tlie Hoard, along with two other applicants, on Friday evening. She is a teacher of wide experience, force of character, and general capacity. She lias spent some time in (iermany, Switzerland, France and England, studying and learning the .various teaching systems, and is well equipped to take charge of the local institution, which will shortly be housed in the new school on the Uld Hospital Koad.
