HONORING OUR SOLDIERS.
CEREMONY AT MTFXSBOROUGH. ■There was a crowded attendance at the Kgniont Road hall last night, when a patriotic gathering was held that was of tliml importance, there. It marked the occasion of another farewell to one of the young; men of the district, in the person of Private K. Bishop (son of Mr. W. Bishop), of the Kith Reinforcements, now on final leave, and afforded an apportunitv for Mr. .T. R. Hill to present the district with a Roll of Honor, containing the names of all the. yonng men who have volunteered therefrom. This latter ceremony took place during the concert interval
In presenting the roll of honor 'Mr. J. R. Hill said it was with feelings of pleasure, not unmixed v.-itli regret," that he thanked them for the privilege of making a few remarks—pleasure at seeing such a large and representative gathering met together for the purpose of bidding farewell to another of their lads, who had responded to the eall, and regret that it was necessary for their young manhood to leave tiieir hearths and homes to fight this cruel enemy, some of them lay down their lives and never to return. As this was a patriotic gathering he thought it would interest those present to know how nobly the Egmont Road district (in which the hall was centrally situated) had responded to the call for men to give up.the plough for the gun, and to fi;;ht for King and country. It was, he said, rather a coincidence that it ivas just twelve months ago that night since he was himself the recipient of a presentation in that hall on leaving the district where he had spent so many years, and he asked ill-. Sampson, as president o .he hall committee, to accept a framed list of npne.s of those who were at one time such prominent figures in the district, many of them quite a few years ago attending the district school. The roll of honor is nicely designed and illuminated. The Allies' (lags are 'Weil worked at the top, and beneath is the motto, "For King and Country" nicely scrolled, and also the wording "Men of Egmont Road District who answered the Empire's '.a11." The whole is surmounted by laurel , Mt. Egmont, and crossed rifles at the foot of the tablet, oil which is inscriued 32 names, and there is still room for several more. The tablet is chastely colored and neatly framed, a..;l reflects credit on the firm of MeLeod and Slade, who were responsible for its workmanship.
The names inscribed thereon arc: E. C. Stanley, Andrew Bishop, Palmer Stanley, Nelson Hill, W. Havden, \V. Bishop, E. Bishop, C. Greenway, T. Hooke, R. Bishop, C. J. Hamblyn, Harold Hainblvii, Stan Hobv, J. Richards, 0. Salway, Sid. Styles, Harold Street, X. Bundle, R. Andrews, Kdgar Giddy, C. K. Street, J. Sorcnsen, Parker, X. Ske'ton, H. Skelton, G. .Skclton, Claude Street, H. Rogers, Sid. Martin, 11. Copestake and C. Balsom,
The singing of "Soldiers of the King," and cheers for the bovs at the front greeted the reading of the names, and after this had subsided the chairman (Mr. 11. C. Sampson), said he could hardly find words to thank Mr. Hill for iiis k ; ndly thought. The lads had left good homes, knowing beforehand some of ilie hardships through which they would have to pass. They bad shown their willingness to make sacrifices arid every possible effort should be made to ligi.ten their burdens when they came back. tApplnus.e). The arrangements for the concert programme were in the hands of Mr. Goldsworthy, and though quite a number of apologies, owing to ill-health, were an•.ounccd by the chairman, the items submitted were greatly appreciated, many being encored. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte overture, Miss Hilda Bishop; song, "The Trumpeter," Mr. Asher; song, "Mother Macree," .Mrs. Robertson (encored); song, "What Wo Have We'll Hold," Mr. W. Bint; recitation, "The Settler's Story," Mr. Goldsworthy; piano solo, Miss Asher; song,
"We'll Look After You," with chorus, Mr. Asher (encored); recitation, "Lorraine," Miss 11. Bishop; song, "The Call to Arms," .Mrs. Robertson; recitation, "The Fireman's Wedding," Mr. W. Bint; pianoforte solo, Miss H. Bishop; song, "Mother of Men," Mr. Asher: recitation, "The Ki-w Churn Rider," Mr. Goldsworthy (encored); song, "There is a Land," Mrs, Robertson. The accompaniments were played by Misses H. Bishop, Hope Asher and Pote. After thanking the performers, the chairman called o,i Mr. Goldsworthy to present "ricate Bishop with a wristlet watch on behalf of the ISgmont Road settlers. Mr. (ioldsworthy, in carrying out this duty, said lie was always ready to take oif his hat to any soldier who enlisted. lie trusted that the recipient would be spared to wear the watch at manv functions in that hall.
Private Bishop, who was greeted with vociferous cheers, briefly returned thanks. The National Anthem was then sung. Aner the hall had been cleared a short programme of dances was gone through, excellent music being provided ''V Misses H. Bishop, Nkclton, and 0. .iddy. whilst Messrs L. Bishop and H. Barriball made capable M's.C. Supper, dispensed by the ladies of the district in their well known bountiful manner, provided a very pleasant interlude. Mescalines N. W. Hill and T. Sniellie organised guessing competitions for a handsome oil-painted cushion, presented! by Miss Yida Milroy. The proceeds, of the social about C2O, will raise the district's contribution to £l4O 14s 2d [including sales and donations, Egmont Road .CHS 14s 2d, and Smart Road .122), which will be devoted towards New Vlvmoutli s ellort to raise the Wounded Soldiers' Fund to £IO,OOO
