In the House lust Aveck Mr. W. T. Jennings, in referring to recent,dealing» in native lands, said that in the Ongarue district one man had been allowed during the past three years to acquire no less than 13,000 acres of native land. To allow native lands to remain idle was a great evil, but it was perhaps an even greater evil to allow these lands to be taken up for purely speculative purposes as had been done during the paw three or four years. Mr. Herries (Native Minister), in reply, said he did not think it possible that a man could acquire 13,000 acres of land as stated by Mr. Jennings, hut if the latter would furnish him with particulars he would mal.u enquiries into the matter. Mr. Jennings gave the name of the man and the block of land. jjlr. J. Keegan who has been for the past eighteen years head train examiner at New Plymouth railway station, has severed his connection with the Railway Department, and, prior to his departure fov Stratford, where he intends to engage in farming pursuits, he was the recipient of a handsome clock as a tangible evidence of the esteem in which he is held by the members of the local railway staff. The presentation was made by Mr. Beek (coaching foreman), who referred to Mr. Keegan's long and honorable service, extending over 23 years, and stated that while the whole staff regretted losing such a good comrade, they extended heartiest good wishes for the future success of Mr. and Mrs. Keegan and family. Representatives of every branch of the service endorsed what had oeen said, after which Mr. Keegan suitably and feelingly responded. The gathering dispersed with' the singing of "He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and three hearty cheers for their guest.

The picture play of "Gladiola" is rather original in its conception, aniv most of the scenes were taken in beautiful country where the gladioli bowers grow in abundance. Miss Viola Dana has a part which is ideally suited to her, and her charm of manner lends itself to the dramatic scenes which appear in the play, the story of which has a particular appeal to the fair sex. "Gladiola" will be shown for the last time to-night at the Empire Picture Palace.
