A PRISONER IN TURKEY.
LETTER FROII PRIVATE SURGENOR. A letter wag received a few days ago by Mr. Surgenor (of Manaia) from his brother, Private Surgenor, who was captured by the Turks iri the early part of the Oallipoli campaign. In the early part of his captivity Private Surgenor. with Australian, English and French soldiers, was quartered close to Constantinople, and was given frequent opportunities of visiting the city, under armed escort, of course, but suffered 110 harsh restrictions. In fact, as he has indicated in his letters from time to time, his treatment from the outset has been remarkably good and allowed 110 cause for complaint. In his letter just received, Privak Surgenor says he is now further hack in the country and is one of a gang of 30 men. Previously he had been at navvy work, but now he is rock drilling, ami receives a wag? of Is 9d a day. This, at a moderate calculation, lie savs, is equal to three times that money in New Zealand. For instance, lie says he can buy chicken s in the villages at 4il each and eggs at 4d a dozen, other things being correspondingly cheap. The squad of prisoners in which he is employed has a cook at a weekly wage, and as he is a master of his business they live well. They are allowed a good deal of liberty and are permited to visit the neighboring , villages. . They are provided with good clothing both for winter and summer wear, and have really nothing to complain of, except the fact that they are prisoners.
Private Surgencr is given a sheet of foolscap weekly on which he is allowed to write a letter of four lines, but it is wonderful, with careful condensation, the amount of information, written or suggested, he can put into that space.— Witness.
