N.Z. SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS.
(Contributed.) On Tuesday afternoon tlie members of tlie Xew Zealand Society of Civil Engineers resident in Taranaki met at tlie office of Mr. K. C. Robinson, C.E., for the purpose of inaugurating meetings and appointing a Provincial Committee. It bad ben felt that- it would be a step in the light direction that members of the profession should meet periodically for the interchange of ideas and the discussion of engineering problems. With this in view the E.vecutive Council divided the Dominion into groups, which would have certain community of interest, and asked members of the profession to take up the opportunities thus ottered.
At Tuesday's meeting the following gentlemen were elected to form tlie iirst Provincial Committee for Taranaki: Messrs. F. Basham, C.R., of Eltliam, member of the Executive Council (chairman ; H. H. Sharp, A.M.1.C.E., Resident Engineer of Public Works Department, Stratford; L. C. Sladdeu, M.N.Z. Inst. Stir., New Plymouth; and K. C. Jbibinson, M.X.Z. Just. Sur., Stratford. Mr. C. H. Lawn, A.M., Aust Inst. Min. Kngs., Stratford, was elected lion secretary.
Apologies for non-attendance lrom several members in other parts of the province were received, and all expressed their sympathy with the objects ill view. The meeting took steps to carry out the aims of the Society in Taraiiaki, and diseussbd several engineering subjects of local and general interest. General meetings of the Provincial members will be held quarterly in alternate centres. These will tend to assist the efficiency of engineers and be of great value to all concerned. It may be of interst ta know that the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers is a strong and healthy organisation, having approximately 200 members, hailing from all parts of the Dominion. The headquarters are at Wellington. The present president is Mr. li. W. Holmes, M.1.C.F., Engineer in Chief of tlie Public Works Department, who is alilv supported in council by several of the moat prominent engineers of our country. The Society will make for higher class and better engineering, and will set before our young men of Now Zealand a profession, the attainment of a standing in wliijli, will at once be a hall mark of ability and efficiency.
