A London cable states that Earl Crawford ha« been ippointed President of the Board of Agriculture. Mrs. Harry Bishop, of Egmont Road, has been notified that her son, Private Andrew Bishop, was wounded on June 29. Mr. Day, stationmasster at Palraerston North, ami formerly of New Plymouth, arrived in New Plymouth last night on a holiday visit. He is accompanied by Mrs. Day. Mr. W. B. Johnstone, Hawera, yesterday received word that his son, Private Johnstone, had been killed in France. The, deceased soldier was a brother of Mr. "Bert" Joluistone, of Fitzroy. At the Hawera S.M. Court on Monday spprcciative reference was made by the Bar and Bench to the enlistment of Mr. Caplen, jnr., and the wish expressed that lie would be spared to return to Hawera. News has been received of the death from wounds in France of Corporal K. 1). Siiell. of the Wellington Supreme Court stall', and formerly of the New Plymouth Courthouse staff. Corporal Snell, who left with the 7th Reinforcements, was well known in football circles, having been a prominent referee, and he was an active worker in the Boy Scout movement. There is not much encouragement for anyone to pay cash in New Plymouth, remarked a speaker at the meeting held to discuss the high cost of living problem last night. He stated that by paying monthly he received 2'/ 2 per cent, discount for his groceries, and that lit lost this discount if ho paid cash over the counter, the goods being the same price in each case. The death of Mrs. Rawson, widow of the late Judge C. E. Rawson, who was for many vears Resident Magistrate and District Judge in New Plymouth, occurred yesterday, he deceased hdy cams out 'from Home when twelve years of age, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gin«w and family in 1 8»2 by the ship Joseph' Fletcher, arriving at New Plymouth on October S of that year. Her father took up land at Tatarammka, but when the Native troubles commenced the family removed to New Plymouth, where Mr. and Mrs. were married on March 2S, lS(ii). For thirty years Mr and Mrs. Rawson lived m New i I\mouth, and in 1890 they went to Invei-car-ill where Mr. Rawson died u few vea°s a«o. Mrs. Rawson returned to New' Plymouth about three years ago and ha s " since resided here. She leaves, a daughter (Miss Rawson) and a son (Ml. 10. Rawson, S.M., of Hamilton), also one brother, Mr. 'Diston .linger, of Manutahi, and two sisters, Miss Sophie Ginger, of Manutahi, and Mrs. Edward Wright, of Wanaanui.
