Very satisfactory acceptances have been received for the first day's events at the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting, which opens to-day, and will he continued on Thursday and Saturday. As usual, a good number of Taranakitraiued horses are engaged at the meeting, and the running of Crown Pearl, Patronymic. Avon Park, Bisogne, Fidelio, King Chiara, Maid o' Gowrie, Styrax, Munition and others will be watched with interest. El Gallo and Braeburn have dropped out of the Wellington Steeplechase, which robs the event of r.tueh interest, and the class of horses engaged in the flat events is hardly np to the standard. However, the fields to-day should be sufficiently numerous to ensure interesting racing. The meeting opens with the Vittoria Hurdles (1:] miles), and the nine acceptors are very moderate. Tf SoultikolT is caught in a galloping humor the public might no nap on it, but many will prefer the chances of the more consistent Austin. Twenty figure in the Stewards' Handicap (six furlongs), and Tajanaki sports will have two good ones to choose between —Bisogne and Avon Park. The pair have been galloping well on the tracks, but Bisogne das more recent form to recommend him. Aurore is reported to be very fit. and some of the shrewdies have been saving up for the Hawke's Bay prad. The Trial Plate looks like a, case of the Auckland-owned Torotoro being served up a scalding hot favorite, with Fidelio and Rio next best backed. Torotoro, it will be remembered, showed fine form at Elleralie recently, filling a place behind Bisogne and Bluestone. The Wellington Steeplechase (3} miles), bears a very open appearance. Tarero is nominal favorite, but Marton, New York. Ngaton, Fagot and Queen's Post are all strongly supported. Tarero is bound to run well under 11.1, but Marton (10.2) and New York (9.7) should be travelling faster than the topweight when it comes to the last half mile. The crowd behind Marton are very sanguine of success, A good field of fifteen should line up for the Parliamentary Handicap, and when the tote bells stop ringing you may depend that Lady Louisa will be as much in favor as anything. Riding engngents reported are as follows: Kooya (W. Young), Ringform (J. O'Shea), Multifual (B Decloy), Flying Start (F. E. Jones), Ladv Louisa (C. Carmont), Orleans (R. Brown), King Chiara (H. Goldfinch), Harbor Light (S. Reid), Hygia (./. Buchanan), Merrie Gain (H. Lowe), Maid o' Gowrie (O. MeC'arten), and Haumakaka (W. Bell), Pursefiller was not paid up for in the Winter Hurdles (2 miles), though her name was telegraphed through as an acceptor. Therefore those who backed her in doubles aftei Friday night should get their coin refunded. In the mare's absence Crown Pearl, who will be. ridden by L. Traill, is likely to be a stro,ig order. Others that have been running well of late 'are Styrax.', Tararu Jack, Gladful, and Marconi, and possibly the best of the quartette may keep within sight of the New Plymouth crack. Art is said to be lame. Those who have any money left will have a final chance to lose it in the Te Aro Handicap (six furlongs), for which nineteen are carded. Otara (if reserved), Bairnsdale, Pernor, Rtrabo, and Munition, are much discussed for the race, and Perrier may start first choice. Idealism went wrong last week, and had to bo withdrawn from the Wellington Steeplechase. Another horse that has been ''nodding'' lately is Scrutineer. Frank Flynn now leads the Auckland hurdle horseman A. J. McFlynn, by one winning ride, and with only the Wellington meeting to go there should be much rivalry between the pair there this week.
